Having done a lot of searching I've noticed that there are a few threads on this but no real answers.

Having now done this I can confirm that if you have auto lights and rain sensing wipers that this is a simple plug and play swap.

I purchased a used one from an 2009 A4 on ebay and simply swapped it for my existing and plugged the connector into the existing cable.

Total cost ÂŁ80. Took me five minutes.

Works a treat.

Is autodimming not standard?

How would you know if its autodimming or not and what was the part number?

Cheers

anything like this derboy:-
audi a3/a4/a6 auto dim rear view mirror 06/07/08/09/10 | eBay
That is exactly the one that I bought from the same seller! Ordered it Sunday. Arrived today.

As for knowing its auto dimming, if it is it has a couple of lights on the front and no "flip lever" at the bottom. See below:

I did it too 3 years ago on my previous A5. One of my favorite mods.

#8 ·
Correct. If you have rain sensing and auto lights.

#6 ·
I'd appreciate any further info on this one as well, cheers.

I dont do alot of driving at night so although a useful mod to those who do I probably will be sensible (this time...) and give this one a miss.

good write up Derboy.

Worth doing even of you don't (I don't either) cracking on Sunny days.

What are the chances that this mirror includes the digital compass, and that its equally simple to install? :yikes:

Love the look of these radar detector mods, hiding the display in the rear view mirror. So cool.

#12 ·
The one I bought doesn't bu retrofitting that one is just as easy as the compass is totally self contained.

I'll do a write up soon, Mick.

I've just phoned my local Audi dealer who quoted my ÂŁ77.37 + VAT for the mirror which seems pretty cheap.

Also when I gave him the reg no. of the car he was adamant that it already had the anti-dazzle mirror from the factory which it definitely does not so it would maybe appear the original was broken at some point.

Every car has an anti dazzle mirror. The difference is "automatic" anti-dazzle which is what Ive fitted. an anti dazzle mirror is just one with the flip lever on the bottom.

Cost of the auto one from the dealer is over 200 quid I believe.

Be careful of what you are buying.

Sorry I missed the "automatic" out of my reply. I questioned the parts guy a few times and he assured me that it was definitely the auto-dim mirror with the button on the bottom instead of the flip switch. I'm going to head along to the dealer at some point to check the schematic before I order.

I have to admit it does seem to cheap. Phoned another dealer and they told me there was 10 different options for the A5 auto-dim mirror ranging from ÂŁ200 to ÂŁ410!

Part number for a Coupe is 8T0 857 511 AB 4PK. ÂŁ180.90
Description "interior mirror, automatic, anti-dazzle, soul (black)"

There is 8T9 857 511 AA 4PK at ÂŁ77 ex VAT (ÂŁ92.84 inc VAT)
Description "interior mirror, anti-dazzle, soul (black)"

The latter is probably what you've been quoted for. There are a number of automatic variants for the A5 Coupe though they are all ÂŁ180+

A few more:
8T0 857 511 AB 4PK (model PR-4L6+6NJ+8N1,8N6) ÂŁ180.90 inc VAT
8T0 857 511 AB 4PK (model PR-4L6+6NQ+8N1,8N6) ÂŁ180.90 inc VAT
8T0 857 511 AD 4PK (model PR-4L6+6NJ+8N7) ÂŁ398.95 inc VAT
8T0 857 511 AD 4PK (model PR-4L6+6NQ+8N7) ÂŁ398.95 inc VAT

I would hazard a guess that the last two are the ones with a build in compass :)

EDIT: All of these are black btw, there are also crystal silver and pashmina beige variants of all of the above.

iwBen, do you have the 3-zone climate control with humidity sensor on the mirror ? which p/n have you ordered for your car ?

#19 ·
My existing connector only has three wires going to it. The new one has eight pins, but both fit together and the mirror works.

#21 ·
Unclip the plastic part running between the bit attached to the windscreen and your headlining.

Then twist the bit at the windscreen ant-clockwise and it will unclip. Detach the existing connector. Install the new one in reverse.

#23 ·
Send the mirror back and order an A4/A5 one!

#26 ·
Open the storage compartment in the overhead light cluster and you'll find a single torx head bolt. Once you unscrew it the whole thing just pops off.

#28 ·
ÂŁ25??? Now that is a bargain!

The one I bought was suppose to work for my car. The plugs are different. Mine is black and the one I got was gray. I have three wires that all go to the thermostat sensor so not sure how this will get power to the mirror. Evil, any chance of you taking a pic of your plug and mirror disconnected?

#30 ·
Sorry it's a pain in the arse to get it on and off. Post pics of yours with the connector.

#32 ·
Hope you wouldn't have to do any real mechanical work if you find this difficult. The part I'm not understanding is that I have a plug with 3 wires and they all go to the thermostat. So how is the power going to get to the mirror? I was sent the wrong mirror once and don't want to order another til I'm sure will work.

F**ksake. Gimme a minute.

Yes I am in the same boat
I have the mirror with six wires coming out with gray plug, but with nothing to plug into, the only wires our three with black plug going to the thermostat to the windscreen, so can I make a connection to live and earth to the mirror from the light cluster in the roof, would that work? :wall:
