Bluetooth Audio via MMI/AMI *Finally Possible (on Full MMI 3G Only)*

OK - So I've spoken a bit about trying to get some kind of decent bluetooth audio support on the MMI/AMI system:

A5OC - Streaming Audio Possible...here's how

A5OC - relocate Ipod Cable

However this weekend I finally had the brainwave which made it possible:

YouTube - Audi MMI 3G Bluetooth Audio Solution (via Modified iPod AMI Cable)

This uses the regular iPod AMI Cable and any iPod accessory out there to make any iPod speaker dock system bluetooth capable (lots of them but get a decent one since it will be doing digital to analogue conversion), the trick is to modify the AMI cable so that the MMI/AMI system thinks the 3.5mm Stereo AMI Cable is connected otherwise it will try to talk to the iPod in Apple language.

This is better than using the regular 3.5mm Stereo AMI Cable with a similar bluetooth receiver accessory because it is cleaner and you don't have to worry about providing power or charging batteries in the receiver.

The modified iPod AMI Cable will still work directly with an iPod (albeit as an external audio input only, no AMI control) but a switch could be added to enable the cable to function in both modes - essentially a compatibility switch which would select whether a real iPod is connected (fluent in Apple language required for AMI control) or a dummy iPod is connected (e.g. bluetooth receiver, not fluent in Apple language).

I just wanted to put this out there to see what people think :)

Note: The ugly thing connected to the iPod in the video is just a bluetooth transmitter since the iPod Classic doesn't have builtin bluetooth, it wouldn't be required on any other bluetooth capable device (e.g. iPod Touch, iPhone or even non-Apple device).

Remember if you have a FL car BT audio streaming works out of the box.
Looks like someone has turned this into a business, at $150 a pop.

For $150 i would just go and buy another ipod and leave in glove box!!! or am i missing the point?

Cheers
Sorry. FL = Facelift 2012 car. 2012 MY in UK 2013 MY in USA.

You are not missing the point.

I believe, like w.ashcroft said, this very thread, is the origin of that product. You knew someone is going to turn this into a profit making product.

Of course if you can afford an Audi, this ain't nothing.

But for us? It's cheaper to make AND minus the liability of a C&D letter from Audi's legal team.
Why would Audi have any legal grounds for a cease and desist case? They have been too lazy to make a proper Bluetooth solution for their customers when cheap domestics have had this capability for years. Since they have not created and patented such a solution , I wouldn't think they have legal grounds.

$150 is a great deal. I don't want another iPod in my glovebox I can't update. I change the music on my iPhone every few days. I sit in the car with iPhone in pocket an music available when driving.
Cable Available

All-

I went ahead and build myself a modified cable, but in my vehicle I'm not getting any power to the cable. I have tested that the cable does send audio properly.

If anyone wants the cable, you can have it for the $40 it cost me to buy the new cable that I modified.

Drop me an email to morgej at rpi.edu if you're interested.

Thx.

Any clue as to the maximum available amperage?

I've been lurking on this thread for about six weeks, since I bought my 2010 A4. Talked to a guy at Audi CS - he said the rumors about software updates are growing more and more weak as time wears on, but with the MY2013's getting A2DP, there may be renewed hope.

So I decided to give this a whirl - I've got the Logitech Bluetooth adapter which I use in the house - but just happens to be 5V. Problem is, it pulls a whole amp (instead of the std. 500mA USB ports provide) - is anyone aware of the amperage that's available? I can't imagine it's much more than 500mA, but figured I'd ask.

By the way, mad kudos to Warren and the rest of the group on this thread for all the time spent discovering and educating.
I have a solution I can make for anyone who's interested. It works well and automatically pairs with your device when you turn on the car. Bluetooth adapter and cable are both included. Plug and play!

$120 shipped to the US.

Anyone interested? PM me if so. I'll get back to you about lead times. Delivery will vary based on demand. It takes me a while to make each one.
If anyone was having trouble like I was finding the Blackberry Bluetooth Stereo Gateway, it was because they discontinued it. A new model was released today ($50). Hopefully I'll get mine soon. Just wanted to pass the info along!

anyone still making the cable? I already have a bluetooth module, just need the cable. my previous Flyout cable from warren went bad! :( it's now only Mono and i dont know how to fix it, might be easier to buy another cable
Anyone making these?

I've got a 2012 A4 with no bluetooth stereo and it drives me nuts. Will gladly pay a fair price to anyone who can manufacture a functioning bluetooth adapter along the lines of Warren's design. Please PM me if interested. Thanks.
Does anyone know of a bluetooth receiver that I can use that pairs automatically? I bough the one made by iSkin and everything works but it requires to be connected manually (by going to the Setting in iPhone) every time I enter the car.
I think the best bluetooth module out there for this task is the BlackBerry Gateway. its powered thru USB and turn on/off with ignition. (you don't have to re-connect each time)

my flyout cable is bad, i need to buy or fix this one. :(
A5s support Bluetooth Audio with the Bluetooth Mobile preparation.

For those want a more expensive option, they can retrofit the Bluetooth Mobile preparation instead.

Yesterday I tested mine working with perfect sound quality.

Only with the facelift bazmangr- and this thread was started way before the FL was even announced :)
Hi from Portugal

Congratulations for this great forum.I learned very much from reading some topics but i need an information that cannot find.I know that AMI cable uses 1k ohm resistor to detect that AUX (stereo cable) is plugged in or 18,7K ohm to know that IPOD is connected, but what about the simple AMI USB cable to plug something like an HDD or USB Pen?which resistor should be in the cable to let AMI knows that an USB drive is plugged in??Im trying to build my own cable but just stuck in this problem.

I know that isnt not an easy question.

Thanks for you time.

I burned a CD with the update on it (as per instruction from Audi from link below), but the update doesn't install on my 2011 Audi w/ MMI.
Software-Update > Mobile phone preparation (Bluetooth) > Mobile device database > Audi Worldwide

The Audi instruction on the referenced page seem to imply that this is not for A5. Since you have installed this, can you tell us whether A2DP streaming of music is supported in this update or is it just for phone functionality?
