Hey guys,

After a super long, 1 year plus development 'journey', there are finally some great news to be shared.
A custom software that is able to turn any MMI 3G High unit into 3G+ is now complete!

If you have MMI where the version starts with HNav, you are in luck!

Image

After the multimedia unit becomes 3G+, it will have:
1. Bluetooth music, not just calls. These will also display track names on MMI and on the cluster.
2. Ability to play video from SD card.
3. Better, more recent & beautiful interface.

But wait! Doesn't MMI 3G+ have a different hardware?
Yes indeed it does, and that's the whole point. This special software is able to run MMI 3G+ code on the MMI 3G High hardware.
There are, however, some small downsides:
1. MMI 3G High has only 40GB hard drive space (versus 60GB), this means, your jukebox size will be reduced.
2. MMI 3G High has no WiFi module, therefore WiFi will not be available.

Is that it? No more downsides?
Yes, that is it! Every other feature works just like an original 3G+ unit.

Do you have a video?
Yes! However, the video is quite long, and may be a bit boring to watch.
It shows a full conversion being done to a A6 C6 car, however, the car model here does not matter, as all cars that have MMI 3G High from the factory are supported.
Here is a link to a sped up conversion video: https://youtu.be/4lyDeXug4DY

The procedure looks a bit complicated..
The video shows a procedure from an early development/release version of the software.
In the current version, there are pretty much no steps and or specialist tools required, apart from inserting an sd card and clicking few buttons in the engineering menu.

Can I have it done on my car?
Sure! That is the point of this thread!
If you are passionate about your car and want to give it a little upgrade, this is a perfect opportunity.
I am looking for more users outside of my country to test this software and provide feedback/suggestions.
My car is korean/japan/china import, can I still get it done?
Yes! If your unit looks like this, it can be upgraded!
Look for text that says H_KR or H_JP or H_CN

It will affect it in a way that it will become an actual 3g+ unit!
This means you will be able to install 3g+ maps and enjoy better navigation overall.
Every feature of 3g+, except for WiFi will be available, some highlights are here:
  1. Bluetooth music.
  2. Playing video from SD-Card (and more format support)
  3. Audi connect (If your unit has a SIM slot) + Google maps (Congo has decided to provide free google maps activation!)
  4. Better navigation
  5. Just in general, modern and nice interface, that does not look like it's from 1999.

In order to apply this upgrade, you need to have:
  1. SD card, at least 2GB in size.
  2. VCDS, OBD11, or any other similar scan tool.

The update will be completely free, with the only condition being that you will provide your upgrade feedback/pictures for everyone to see on this thread after the conversion is done.

Hi all,
just stopping by to say that this guy is maybe the only one in years that i see spending so much time on these systems and achieving so much! Astonishing work and results of course.
He started this work more than one year ago and had to go thru a lot of challenges. He went very deep in reversing the code of some components that very few out there know even how they work. We were discussing the work at every step that's why i can confirm that what he says is true :)

To make it even more interesting, for the first 10 MMI3G high conversions with GSM modem in them i will provide Google Earth map free of charge!

I do have a custom online traffic server, which can work either using original tpeg protocol (for countries that do have tmc tables) or my own modified version of it, which can pinpoint any location on the world map with precision.
Using it, there is an infinite amount of dynamic POI's that could be generated.

Image

So while I do enjoy hosting it for my own use (with my MMI effectively pulling traffic data from waze and other sources),
The viability of hosting such a thing is a big question

#7 ·
Interesting. Trafficmaster has been switched off in the UK so all MMI3G users and a lot of VW, Skoda, Seat owners are left with no TMC information. Perhaps there is scope for a replacement service? Can you host with Congo map service?

#8 ·
Hosting a server comes with two problems:
  1. A decent dedicated server with the required specs at a reputable hosting provider will cost no cheaper to run than 100eu/month.
  2. Once people start using it, they would expect it to stay up for X amount of months/years, so maintenance must be considered.
So in this case - hosting just for a few people doesn't cut it, however, if the demand is high and there is guaranteed amount of users - some replacement service could be done.

Very interested in doing this and will be more than happy to upload pictures and feedback.

I've got obdeleven and carista as well.

Always preferred the + UI so much better looking.

Wish I had the sim card slot but sadly not, i have to use my phone as a mobile hotspot.

#14 ·
Nice, just as an aside on screen grabs, DrGer pointed me to a simple method which provides great clear images which do not require a camera or 'phone ... "With a FAT32 SD in slot 1, press and hold the [<<] and [>>] console keys at the same time until the console LEDs start to flash (about 3-5 seconds). This writes a PNG file of the current MMI display to the SD card in slot 1. Preferred for documenting system issues, in my opinion."
Cheers

Hi, I'm from AU, currently O/S, but I would like to give this a spin (and provide you with screen grabs) when I return in early Feb. The car is a mid-2011 A6 allroad 3.0TDi C6/4F no SIM slot, MMI 3G High system (Australian), whose firmware I updated to the most recent (to the best of my knowledge) which is HNav_EU_K0257_6_D1.

Cheers

I'll add some more pics later but will give a description of the process etc.

MJ kindly contacted me via whatsapp and links to required software and together went through the process from start to finish.

It took a bit longer than it probably would as it was done via WhatsApp I did a scan of my car using OBD11 and sent it over for Mj to see what my system was etc He then gave me clear step by step instructions on downloading the software, adding it to the SC card. entering the Engineers menu and starting the install.

It was pretty easy and after it was complete we went to the Green Menu and tweaked a few more settings and it was complete.

Still need to amend a couple of things as I retrofitted Footwell lighting and at the moment even though they still work I can't adjust them via the MMI, I also amended the Rear parking sensors to show the graphics display and it flashes up briefly before disappearing again and the heater adjust functions don't show on the MMI.

I need to check Video in Motion still as I activated that with OBD11,

I also still need to add the Nav maps and I suspect that with a bit of fiddling in the Green menu they should all be ok, I did try with OBD11 but no joy yet.

All in all what can I say?

I now have Bluetooth music from my phone (which I always wanted) and once I work out how to put videos on a SD card in the right format my old girl will be so much better than before.

Mj was amazing, helpful, clear instructions, incredibly patient and a total genius for achieving this.

The guy is a legend.

It seems that the link there for RoW leads nowhere now
Yes,
here is the map link (thanks Byront for that)
And here is prepared fixes:
ANZ 3G+ - 412.3 KB file on MEGA
ME 3G+ (untested yet) 412.4 KB file on MEGA
SA 3GHigh - 412.4 KB file on MEGA
SA 3G+ - 412.4 KB file on MEGA

Install the map, use the activator from very first post and then use the fix provided here.
Enjoy your new map.

Fixes for other parts of the map will be provided on demand
Here is the post you are looking for

#23 ·
Hi, thank you. I note Congo is talking about "fixes" for the maps, is that something that I need to d/l too as I notice you mention not to install any "activators/fixes/HDD reformating scripts or the like"?

Cheers, all the best, Peter

As promised a few more pictures.

Mj has sorted most ofvthe little niggles with only the rear parking graphics glitch which is being worked on.

Can't believe how great the mmi looks now.

I'm now looking into how to play videos from the SD card format etc and play about with my new updated mmi.

Thanks again to Mj for this, it's transformed my car.

Hi TJ001, just wondering about the screen showing Audi Drive Select. Is your car equipped with it? I guess that screen replaces (at least on my 2011 A6 C6/4FH allroad) the circular red/black dial with each setting. Does the car depicted represent your model, or is it just a generic car? So, for mine, would it display the appropriate A6 allroad? Cheers & congratulations with being the first ...

This is likely related to the the work we did on your HNav system last year to fix the missing acios_db.ini file for the MMI3G AN region navdb. Depending on mj131's implementation, you may need to re-run the nav unblocker script after installing the MMI3GP AN navdb. --g
The activators/unblockers, while super convenient, are based on a really bad idea.
Stopping the vdev-logvolmgr (like most activators do) has many side effects, such as disabled background database file verification & more.
My build does not have (or need) any of such brute 'hacks' and installing them would only worsen the operation of the unit.

Thanks for the heads up DrGER, I might, if I may, copy you in using your mmi3ginfo3-231230 script when I do the install, it may give you more of an insight into what is going on with the implementation.

Cheers, Peter
Please do not run any scripts or share any information/files generated by them. I ask this as a way to respect my work and effort to make this possible.
While I do provide this on here now for free as a goodwill to the community, I do not want my builds to become another "solution" that is being shared and sold for-profit by others.

OK, understood. My concern regarding changing the system was related to the installation of maps last year bought from an "official" vendor that borked my system & DrGER was good enough to rescue it for me ... see this link

AS DrGER is skilled in this area, perhaps you could help each other out from time to time when/if problems arise?

Another update,

With help from Mj maps are now working perfectly.

Had a lot of 140 errors when installing and just hit retry and the install continued we also had to tweak a few bits and pieces and at one point Mj pointed put my car was 400 feet below ground 🤣 but finally success and so far the 3GP nav software is working.

Mj has been incredible and he's looking at a bug where the rear parking sensors graphics only flas up briefly.

As far as I can see everything works as intended, only thing i cant see is the battery level which i enabled pre update, and so far no luck converting video clips to play off the SD card but I'm so, so happy I did the update and am so thankful to Mj for the support, advice and patience he has shown.

Thanks for the update. Just looking back over your part of the thread, the main glitches (to me) appear to have been with the maps installation (and other items/systems that you modified prior), rather than any problem with the install of the firmware/software modification from mj131, would that be a correct assessment? Cheers.

Prwtty much, only problems were things id added via OBD11 .

Footwell lights
Battery level
ADS
Heater controls displaying on screen

The nav was fine once I added a section I'd missed in the update.

The actual firmware update from Mj was pretty simple and with only a few tweaks after.

Hopefully my cockups will help Mj in future development. 🤣

Great to know, as mine is otherwise stock standard (apart from FW update & maps update), it augurs well for @mj131 's development of the 3 High to 3+ FW/software. Cheers

Very nice work. Congratulations and thanks to all that worked on it. I heard about this conversion like one month ago, but I didn't wanted to pay for it. Is nice that you don't need to change the buttons (control head) like in the case when you install a real MMI 3G+.
Can I have the software, please?

This is a special, limited time, goodwill gesture for the community of Audi enthusiasts who want to improve their car.
Can you write me the specs of your car?

#45 ·
I would Love to try this on our 2011 North american Q7.
I will send you a pm with the details.
Thnxs for doing this, I was always wondering if it would be tricky to do but in the end always thought there are probably 2 many io ports differences for me to figure this all out.
I wonder if if this update will also make it possible to use the sata ssd and sata to pata converter, but I doubt as I bought the cheap converter and now everything trippled in price so I am just waiting for the harddisk to die to excuse the costs.
Anyway I have a backup of the harddisk so if things go bad I can always return to pretty much factory as it had no update before we bought it.

#49 ·
that was about as simple as the initial upgrade from factory to k133.
Actually slightly easier because mj131 holds your hand virtually all the way ;)

He wrote apart from a lot software and firmware changes also a solid script to update the car.

I can't say anything about the navigation update yet as my 2.5 year old woke up when I came back after updating the car. And I still need to download the latest.

here are some screenshots during the update and the results

all in all it took about 3 hours including playing with the new system with the better bluetooth sound and interface.
I asked during the update if he had a way to get back to the old firmware and he told me yes but I only have done that one one unit that sits on my testbench vs 100+ units that have been updated.
It seems like no one wants to go back ;)

sadly my instrument cluster does not support gps time otherwise I would see the option to use that. Having the time zone in this menu is however already an upgrade. even though we don't use a car much, when we do, we do cross time zones when we travel. I should show the time zone selection map as it is neat.

HD fm still works luckily as xirius sound compression is unbearable to listen to.

Hi, thanks for that update. So, the old maps are not changed during the FW/software/script updating? You only change them if a new version exists and you d/l them to update it later? I ask because my current maps I installed in 2023 are the latest available for AU (2021 ver 5.13.4). Cheers, all the best, Peter

p.s. interesting to hear that the MMI can be rolled back to the original version ... wonder if this has any significance if the car is being serviced by Audi (rather than Audi adjacent or generic service centres).

I do have a question that maybe other ppl might want to know the answer to too.

All the locks have been removed from this firmware considering navigation, so this means you can install any map you want, EU, NAR or ROW.

Now while looking for the newest NAR available which seems to be 8R0051884JE(KM is supposedly available from dealer) I read this note:
MMI software version must be at least K0900; latest is K0942

Now I am 100% confident that mj131 used the latest firmware to update from high to plus and our firmware is 1530 vs the official 942.

But just to be sure...we are good with firmware version right ;)

The harddisk is wiped in the process and setup anew, apart from a very few little things like the Bluetooth name of the nav unit is retained you get fresh out of the factory unit without any nav maps..

About the dealer ..... 3g high vehicles are generally out of warranty so dealer does not care. Even my dieselgate is now out of warranty completely.
And they were not supporting your 3g high before and they also basically dropped support for 3g plus so there is NO difference in that regard towards the update.

OK, so still need to re-do the map install, understood.

Just here in AU, I found the Audi dealer/service a bit tetchy about upgrades & add-ons they didn't do ... 1 had a meltdown about my old A6 quattro Avant having Denison Gateway 300 iPod/Aux/USB interface plumbed into the system. Cheers, all the best, Peter

ONe other advantage of the plus firmware that while searching poi you don't have to wait on the unit finding poi you can just continue adding letters.

I don't have the idea the unit is slower or faster then before, so you get vastly improved Bluetooth more recent map availability and some tweaks in de ui that make life just a bit easier.

If audi really stops providing map updates after the KM update with 2022 map data this update stretches the nav to be useful for a couple of more years.

Hello. Just checked and mine starts with HNav, but how do I know If I have the 3g high one and not just the 3g. New to the software side. Anyway, love to get the software. Really missing the video from sd card... View attachment 187582
there is no such thing as "just 3g"
with HNav you have 3G high
the other option would be BNav, which is 3G Basic.

in short, you have 3G High
