Hi,

I have a slightly over-cooling problem. I have checked and replaced the main radiator thermostat, but still the over-cooling persists.

I have read when the EGR thermostst fails, it fails in an open position as it is an electronic stat. The coolant circuit runs to the back of the main stat bypassing it and pushing cool water through the rad which in turn over-cools the engine especially in winter and at a steady speed or downhill.

Problem is, I don't know where it is located or have a part number for it.

I have spoken to TPS and they confirmed the price, but wouldn't reveal the part number.

Does anyone have any info on the EGR thermostat, where it is or where it's located. Internet searches don't reveal much. Apparently it has an orange plug, so will be searching my engine bay for it too.

Hi, I have changed thermostat for 3.0 TDI, you can order it separately, but not directly from VW/Audi but as a replacement part. It is easy to test, if you are unsure if it is faulty, but it is hard to reach.
I will look up for part no, I have it written down

EDIT: I found part no for 2.0 TDi, it is 1K0 121 113A.
Yours look similar like this, when you open the hood, and remove plastic covering over engine, you can see it maybe 5 cm right of oil filter, mounted directly to the EGR valve.

I see the following numbers on it
He1epiq bg
106/09 8025 00680
059 906 088p
Ats200db
If you can tell me how I get it off, I'll post it to you if you pay postage.

The 059 906 088P is most likely the part number.

That's from a CCWA! 3.0 TDI

Thanks Eamonn!

But it looks like TPS have given me a wrong description with orange plug!! That is the temperature sensor!

The bit I want as st_coupe has kindly given on that parts exploded diagram is 059 121 113 K and the best bit is it is over £100 cheaper than the sensor!! :)

Thanks all, much appreciated! Off to TPS to order a 059 121 113 K. Or it looks like a miniature main stat, so may inspect it first!

Now I know what it looks like, I can go searching! So long as the snow holds off!!

Same as a faulty or sticking open main thermostat. Takes a while to get up to 90 degrees or never does if you don't get stuck in traffic.

Also if it does get to 90 then you drive at a steady speed, more so down a long hill, you will see the temp drop down again where as it should stay at 90 once there.

Mine was only getting to 70 degrees on the drive home from work.

I have disconnected the EGR coolant pump which is just above the main stat, this has helped a bit in keeping the coolant temp up as it's not pumping coolant through the rad and back into the engine.

I could find no info on this EGR stat!, but thanks to this forum, it should now be resolved! :)

ST_coupe,

Did you have to bleed your heater matrix coolant. Since I refilled after checking the main stat, I get the 'flushing' noise behind the dash. I've tried looking for a bleed screw for the heater, but couldn't see one, do you know where it is?

Fitted the EGR thermostat, only £18, the old one had come out of it's correct place by the clips not being clipped in the small recesses so it wasn't sealing.

Little bit fiddly, but straight forward.

Now I'm up to 90 degrees after 3 miles of urban driving and it stays there! Actually when I was test driving and the DPF started to regen and the rad fans came on! Not heard those since using the air-con last summer!

Dave, you absolute legend!

I'm from South Africa, been having the same issue for a few months on my A5 3.0tdi, I replaced the Thermostat, then the Water Pump, then the Temp Sensors, and my car was still overcooling, would never reach more than 70*C even sitting in traffic for an hour. Was going absolutely mental, the technicians at Audi had no idea!

Ordered a new Egr Thermostat from Audi South Africa, got it fitted this week ( 2-3 hour job), and the car is up to operating temps in 5 minutes, and it stays there :)

Appreciate you posting on this forum, massive help

Hi Stef,

It's not a hard job, just a few parts to remove from the top, then it is a little fiddly to do as you are working around pipes etc. Removing more parts would make it easier, but a longer process. I did try and remove the EGR, but this was stuck fast! So rather than breaking it, I left it in place and worked around it.

If the temp on the dash get to 90 degrees, and you are saying no hot air from your heater, then I think it will be the valve in the heater circuit that opens/closes when you select lower or higher temp on the climate control?

Hi Folks

I hope you can help me?

Audi A5 Coupé (8T3) 2.7 Diesel 140KW

I have the exact same issue with low engine temperature, replaced main stat and now get to 70’C never getting to 90’C.
Can only get to 90'C in idle with 3000rpm for 120 seconds. As soon as I drive it cools to 70’C.

My engine is smaller than yours, but identical issue.

I cannot locate a spare EGR Thermostat anywhere.

Only think I can locate which may have same function is Coolant Hose with Valve 059 121 105 F

Do you think this has the same function as the EGR Thermostat you refer to?

Appreciate any advice you can offer!

Best regards
Michael

Hi Michael,
Sounds like you need the EGR stat. The part numbers are in this thread. The stat is used across the VAG range. Same as engine stat, it stops coolant flow from the EGR.

Mine had broken inside and the new part looks to be better designed. The 2.7 is very similar to the 3.0, just bore capacity and probably a few other bits.

Hi Folks

I have managed to buy replacement coolant regulator thermostat thankfully.
I have spoken to a number of mechanics who all seem to be reluctant to do the job for me.

Any possibility some of you maybe able to help me with a ladybird procedure (step 1...Step x) to remove old and install new coolant regulator please.
Step 1
Step 2

I would very much appreciate your help.

Regards
Michael

Hi MWo and Dave,

I have replaced this thermostat on my A5 3.0 TDI as well with 059121113N. The old one looked exactly like the one on MWo's picture above and the revision at the end was H if I remember correctly. The new one is leaking unfortunately. I am not sure if I have simply mounted it wrong or if the revision N does not fit to my engine (CAP). Was also your old stat thicker as the new one (N)?

Many thanks

Hey guys I'm having exacly the same issue but I just realized that maybe the egr thermostat I've bought from eBay might be not for CCWA engine ?

Also replaced Thermostat, Water Pump and EGR Thermostat.

Part number it's Febi 1K0 121 113 A

Please advise 🙏🏼

Do you think it could be the culprit ? I been on this since November 😢
