Ok Im a little puzzled as when I checked the door modules in vcds they had tick boxes for illumination? so are they compatable?

see:-

Can someone shed some light on this (pardon the pun), compatable or not?

thankyou JB

So having checked mVCDS its appears I can connect up to my module for both the door entry lights and red side light and also the door illumination light so no need for long wiring harnesses. It appears to be Pin 16 for the door entry/puddle lights, Pin 3 for the door illumination led and splice into the wire connected to pin 5 for earth according to my mate T8UPS.

Then activate within vcds.

This could be an easier mod then I thought.

Hey Jonnie, I'm soon going to be doing this mod myself. I bought on ebay.de a pair of the RS5 door openers which have the light guide for the illumination (and much nicer design handles too). They also came with the door wiring looms, complete with all the connectors for the lights. The only problem is they don't have the connectors for the seat memory buttons so I'm going to have to combine the drivers side loom with my own somehow.

I have discovered that there may also be an output form the control module for an ambient light. This would be for lighting the door storage pocket, and I think it would adjust from the MMI in sync with the footwell lights. I also think this is the option that some door control modules don't have as indicated by the full or half full squares printed on it. This was never an option on the A5 but the modules are (allegedly) much the same as the A6 which did have the option, and can be (allegedly) exchanged.

The A6 parts catalogue had a light unit 4G0 919 390 to illuminate the storage pocket, it takes a 4pin connector 8K0 973 754 which uses the usual 000 979 009 E wires. Pin 1 is ground and pin 2 is power which goes to the control unit 32pin connector, pin 8. It appears to be an LED type light, fits into the underside of the armrest. We'd need to cut a hole for it.

I've been waiting to do this mod as I've been retrofitting the B&O sound system, and that needs both extra tweeters in the doors, and extra wires back into the car. I only want to take the doors apart once. I can already say though, that adding extra wires from inside the car to inside the door is a major major total pita. I've done all the wiring inside the car, and run wires to the door connectors which are a plug and socket design. You can't just feed a wire through.

In the panel you mention (in my door anyway), there is an oval shaped hole (not sure what for) and I was thinking of ways to utilise this to hold the LED rather than having to cut a fresh hole in the door...

Some good info here guys, might just look for the rs5 handles. I have however bought white leds to match the footwell lights so will see.

Yes if I can avoid running wires though and out int othe car then great and I think up to now I know how to do it tapping into pin 3 for the door handle illumination which is what the wiring diagram is showing. Not too sure about pin 8 though (nothing hsowing on my wiring diagram)? within VCDs its showing tick boxes for door entry lights, ambient lighting, door warning lights and interior door handles so there must be pins for these or will these be listed within vcds anyway regardless if the module is compatable or not?

But then the wiring diagram for my 2008 model only shows door illumination lamps, door entry light and the side light - but thats ok as all I need are these pins I guess. I guess the ambient lighting is on newer models/newer modules? what yer is your sPara?

Just to confirm looking at the wiring diagram pin 5 of the 8 pin connector block, the brown wire is earth and runs through to the lower earth line on the diagram. Splice into this wire for your earth point, connect the door puddle and entry lights to pin 16 of the large 32pin connector block and the door handle illumination light to pin 3 of this same block. Tick the check boxes in the drivers/passengers door module on vcds voila!

Wired up the lights today, all went well.

Had to cut out the puddle light hole but there is already a guide line/template there.

Pin 16 for the puddle light and side red light (on the main 32 pin connector that has a blue cover)

Pin 3 for the door handle illumination light (again on the 32 pin connector). The connector block slides out of its surround and you simplky insert the pin into the relevant hole.

Splice into the big brown wire going to one of the connectors for earth on the module (you cant miss it, its the biggest wire and has another wire next to it (middle connector).

Tick the door entry lights/puddle lights etc within vcds and save.

I installed leds for the puddle lights and also the side red light but may change the side red light back to the halogen bulb as its only lighting up in one area and not the whole of the lamp.

For the door handle lights, I drilled a 4.9mm hole, fed the 3mm led (white pre-wired resistor led) and housing in and connected up behind. This hole was drilled behind the handle so you dont see the led from the side.

Taped the wires and used some duct tape to fix it to the door panel so it doesnt 'rattle' around.

JB:thumbsup:

p.s. My module didnt have the full rectangles only half rectangles so worked ok. I dont think this matters on the A5 whether full or half.

What technique / tool did you use to cut the extra hole for the puddle light? I'll be attempting the first of these tonight hopefully.

I now have the RS5 handles on both sides, while swapping I compared them to the original and the difference is more than cosmetic. The RS5 one is about 50% heavier (my guess) and the spring is twice the size. That's why it feels much more solid when you use it. The red lighting in it is subtle however. Very subtle.

Two ways paradyne, you can either use a Dremel or if you don't have access to one, use a stanley knife to cut it out. Don't just go straight in though, even the sharpest stanley will struggle - my advise is to get a wood chisel, place the door card bottom side up with a work surface underneath and chisel around the inside edge of the recess to compress the plastic and make it easier to cut.

Stanley knife but with a really thick blade and drill/small bit to get around the corners.

Thanks llBen, those were the two I was thinking of, would be a bit worried about slipping with a stanley knife and damaging the panel. I'll try the Dremel or similar.

Need to change the leds in the door handle to point downwards perhaps. You dont realise how bright they are until nighttime.

Paint the Led with red paint that way the glow around the handle with match the OEM Illumination, it will also lessen the distraction of the white light

Jonnie,

Glad the pins worked which saved you running miles of wire.

for thos who dont have them i can supply pre made looms for the puddle and warning lamps?

i do the my custom panel in Red for the red warning light if required? its more consistant in lighting up the whole lamp, and the LED's are red to give it the more enhanced look.

The Audi light pack is a must i think, i cant believe its an option on a 30k+ car

The LEDS were really cheap for a pack of 10 so I will get some red ones instead.

Well I cut the first hole for the puddle light last night, and damn it I made the slot 0.5mm too long so the light doesn't 'snap' into place. tiny bit of glue in one corner will keep it in place so not a total disaster! Other door I'll get perfect. Tonight I'll fit the led's I got from Trups at AITP (thanks!) and also I'll be adding some sound deadening to the door and the panel while it's all dismantled.

JonnieB Do you know where I can get the Inner Door Handle LED Illumination ?

I have 1 side but need the other. anybody know ?

Have already checked ETKA for a part number but nothing comes up for the see-through bar, already have the small white LED part and the wiring.
