Hi guys, I've just bought (from ebay) a auto anti dazzle mirror from a a6 which has a different cable to my existing one similar one to that you bought Jonnieb, but have no clue how to do the splicing of wires as the connectors do not fit and the new mirror from the a6 and does not have climate zone sensor I may be a bit dim (like my new mirror) but don't understand how to retrofit it can someone help or does anyone live in the Birmingham/ Solihull area that could help me???
DarkA5:-

Remove your mirror from car. The long plastic piece that goes on the windscreen - prise is away carefully. You then twist the mirror surround that fixes to the windscreen anticlockwise and the mirror pops off, disconnect the connector.

Existing mirror:-
What you need to do is remove the bottom plastic surround from your existing mirror that houses your sensor (pic below), pull down on it easing it away slightly from the metal body with a screwdriver, it should pop off.

You will then see where a small blue connector is plugged into a black sensor in this housing maybe? Using a small screwdriver release the blue connector from this sensor within this surround.

Feed the cable back though the mirror and out. You then need to transfer this cable to the new mirror. That’s it done for your existing mirror.

New Mirror:-
Take the surround off the new mirror as you did with your existing mirror.
Carefully prise away the black plastic block leaving enough gap to feed your existing cable through (with small blue connector) from behind the mirror.

Basically when you took the blue connector out from your existing mirror you want to put it back in the same way in the new mirror connected up to your surround you transferred over. (see photo).

Once you have done this and have both cables within the new mirror you then need to splice them together.

What I did is strip away carefully enough to expose the strands within the cable of your existing brown and red wires but not break the connector off the cable. Leave the purple/yellow wire –this is CAN wire not to be touched.
The photo below shows similar to what I have done but without the solder.

Cut the connector block off the 5 wires from the new mirror, you only need the black and white wires. Strip away the ends of these two wires to reveal the strands and wrap the black wire (ground) around the brown strands in your existing cable and tape up. Wrap the white wire (power) around the strands in your red wire and tape up. Then tape up all the wires and refit the mirror.

JonnieB - you are the best...... thanks so much for your detailed post it was really helpful and it works a treat (will fit it in properly in the morning just checked the power for now as its too dark) and thanks Eclimax for the pictures, there are some really great people on this forum. what I wanted to know (just out of curiosity) what are the other 3 wires on the auto dimming mirror used for and also what does the right hand LED do and also there seems to be an LED at the back of the mirror what does that do???

Thanks again

JonnieB - Many thanks

I would like to add my thanks to JonnieB and all the other posters:thumbsup:. I was stuck with exactly the same situation (wrong connector and no thermo sensor in the replacement). I have just completed the mod on my 2008 A5. I have not done the full system test but the function appears to be working when I trick it by covering the forward sensor.

I couldn't have done it without you

Will post if I get any surprises like temperature issues in the car or light issues.

Cheers

TB
PS I don't know what the other wires do either. Anyone?

Retrofit autodimming rear view mirror

I would also like to add my thanks to all posters on this thread
I managed to retrofit auto dim rearview mirror to my 2011 2.0 tdi s-line A5 Quattro.

Wiring was fairly straightforward, i used the live and ground going to humidity sensor for the new mirror.

The new autodim mirror (part no. 8R0 857 511 4PK ) did not attach easily to current windscreen mount. This was despite Audi confirming this part should fit my car. I had to file down some extra metal ridges on the new mirror and swap the metal clip plate from the old mirror to the new one to get it to fit securely.

Now all working fine and I am able to drive at night without being constantly blinded by other drivers.

Thanks again !!

Andy

Sooooooooo, after reading here I've gotten around and got me an auto dimming mirror, but not doing enough research has got back to bite my ass.

Currently not having anything else than rain sensor on the front window.
And the one i got have Auto dim, AND some sort of sensor....

Basicly my question is: Does the mirror need any other signals than 12v and ground?

I'm just removing the sensor, and then connecting 12v and ground to the mirror. Hopefully this is enough........

Great write up JonnieB

Just fitted my auto mirror all thanks to JonnieB and his knowledge of the electrics on the mirror. My mirror was from from a Q7, it fitted perfectly although it did have 6 wires on the original loom unlike the 5 the mirror that JonnieB mirror fitted.

The great thing was the sensor was fitted to the original windscreen on my November 2010 A5 even though I don't have auto wipers/lights.

Question: if I retrofit the auto lights switch does this take its que when set to auto from the sensor on the windscreen like the interior mirror does?

Thanks for any info.

Hi guys, just followed the guide without success.

I have I believe a Q7 mirror as it has 6 wires, there doesn't appear to be a white wire. Having fitted it, and not working. I took it off and the wire appears to be grey.

The wires on the new mirror are: pink, green, yellow, brown, black and grey.

Help to id the correct wires will be appreciated.

Garbe, did you sort this mirror issue out or not?

Adding autodimming rear view mirror

Hi All

Had my car 2 weeks and love it. This only thing I miss from my old A3 is the autodimming mirror. Until you've had it you dont know how much you miss it when its gone . So this is my first car upgrade.:moped:

Unlike previous posts I didn't manage to get a auto mirror for ÂŁ25. But I did get a brand new one, from audi (via ebay site) for ÂŁ113. Which I didn't think was to bad (Part number: 8R0 857 511 4PK)

So first had a look at the connection behind the mirror. I have 3-zone climate control so there's a temperature sensor in my current mirror (see below)

Next take off the top cover. This was a little tricky as wasn't sure were the clips were. They are closest to the window. Once removed you can easily see the wires etc. Then turned the mirror anti-clockwise and it popped off.

The new mirror I got has six wires coming out of it all various colours. But the connection for the car there are only three wires (red, brown, purple/yellow).

Was initially worried that I would need to splice some wires, etc as others have. I know the other wires are for dimming wing mirrors and to cancel auto-dimming if you put the car into reverse. That would require a new wiring harness. I could do this, but maybe at a later date, if I decide to add the folding mirrors, etc. So connected it anyway and was supprised to find the green light came on :2thumbsup: Last problem was getting the mirror back on. Had a little trouble with getting the clips on, but managed in the end.

Cheers to all the previous posts for instructions on what to do.

ÂŁ80 incl delivery of ebay...fitted in 5mins.... I'm happy ;-)

Question - what is the power button for? does green mean it's on or off? seems to work well but I can't tell difference with light on or off....Duhhh

Cheers Gazz

Hi Folks,

I have a 2010 A5 Quattro with auto lights/wipers and 3rd zone climate control. I assume that the 4L0857511 4PK mirror will require the re-wiring procedure described by JonnieB for any A5. Are people buying this mirror because it is a less-expensive substitute for the OEM mirror that Audi would install on an A5? Or, is there no OEM auto-dimming mirror that is meant to plug and play directly with the A5's standard configuration?

Also, if I install the 4L0857511 4PK mirror, do I lose any of my current functionality (e.g., humidity sensing, windscreen temp, etc.) ?

Thanks in advance for the help.
