Dealer can't shift the S5

Thought this might be of interest.

While looking over my used A5 I'm about to buy, the dealer pointed out a V8 S5 sat next to it in the lot. He confidently predicted that they wouldn't be able to sell it as no one wanted V8's in the current economy. Apparently they end up shipping them all to New Zealand as they are popular there and even with shipping and import duties it's cheaper than locally sourced! Seems a shame for such a lovelly motor to end up being put in a box and sent half way round the world to the land of sheep!

Pity they don't knock the prices down to a representative price to sell over here then. I'd have one if they could discount it sufficiently to cover the difference in fuel over the period of ownership. For me, currently running a 3.0TDI, they have to make it ÂŁ5k cheaper than an equivalently spec'd a5 for the 5 years I'd have it! Ain't gonna happen is it?!

That's what I think of my TDi, but then I also think the S5 might hold it's value better? I'm still toying with the idea of going petrol, but then have tax prices to consider etc. not really been convinced yet that petrol is the way to go.

However, the missus is hinting at an estate for the next car, that will be S/RS 4/6 rather that diesel!

The other consideration of the S5 over the 3.0tdi is the road tax difference ...

Yea but let's face it, on a car like this, 200 or 500 a year doesn't really add too much on expense.

Although the S5 sounds very nice with the V8, given that a remapped 3.0TDi is almost as quick and with a good exhaust system can sound ok too, its hard to justify the huge difference in running costs, to get the S5.

I have been saying this for nearly 5 years and IMHO you don't need a remap or different exhaust.

I would however prefer a V8 to a Diesel if fuel costs were not in the equation BUT 40mpg friom a 3.0Tdi quattro or 15-20mpg from the V8!

I bought my V8 as I wanted the noise and fun from driving a V8 petrol. I came from a sports Diesel engine before which was quick (260bhp 500nm) and returned 45mpg. But it sounded like a taxi and was that much fun to drive.

My heart won the battle this time and the S makes me smile each time I drive it and boy does that engine roar (through Milltek exhaust) get some attention ;)

And yet the RS's are gone before they even make it onto the Audi approved web page a lot of the time.

I would only ever consider diesel for something like a range rover. Diesels no matter how much people try and convince themselves otherwise are nowhere near as much fun as petrol. Tiny rev range and awful sound. A high revving V8 is a thing of beauty but like everyone says you pay for it in fuel and tax. Still you couldn't pay me to take a diesel over my petrol.
