Audi A5 2010 3.0 TDI CCWA stock vs remap

Dear owners,

May I ask you to post your dyno results from the stock 3.0 TDI (CCWA) 239bhp engine. I am going to remap my car next week, but the tuner does not have a dyno to test the car before and after the remap.

At large, the problem is that I do not have the time and frankly would like to spare some coin of paying a third-party to test the car both before and after the remap. As such, I am going to get only the post-remap results. Considering that I do not know what portion of the hp/torque produced by the engine is actually delivered to the wheels (quattro), I am afraid that when I get the dyno figures post-remap (which undoubtedly would by at the wheels), I would not be able to make sense of them. Planning on testing the car on a Dyno Jet setup.

People have been telling me that there is a 10-15% power loss in quattro vehicles (at wheels), in comparison to the engine power/torque. Anything more specific than this would be greatly appreciated.

I am new to tuning, have ran the A5 stock for the past 3 years. Please do not judge me.

The thing you’re likely to find is that not all tunes are equal.

A well established tune that’s been refined over lots of cars of the same model should be fairly consistent, but even then it won’t collelate to a different tune from a different tuner.

Some might be designed to push an engine to near the limit, others might be drained to stay much more within standard tolerances, for example.

Do you know what tune are you wanting to use?

Having a dyno available to tune on seems to be a valuable thing, so that the tune gets all it safely can from your engine, so you don’t miss out on potential power, and doesn’t over-stress any particular component and risk damage.

Thanks for the comment. I am going for a well-balanced map - no stress on components but higher power/torque compared to stock. Safety first, as it is a 8-year old car with questionable maintenance history in the first 5. A full diagnostics will be performed prior to the remap.

Any advice on what to tell the tuner with regards to the new settings? Anything in particular to look out for?

My A5 3.0tdi quattro 08 manual was maped with the same map as an A7 3.0, however mine was never benched but the A7 was benched to 350hp and 800nm and it was an automatic.
Mine is maped to its limit tho, so no more until i start swapping out parts in the bay.

I couldnt tell from your post if you had an automatic tranny or the manual, which you should keep in mind the automatics doesnt last the same amount of NM as the manual which i think is good for about 800nm.
Iv seen many posts on here about the automatic trannys and how much NM people tuned them to so browse the sections on forum with mapping threads.

Exhaust is also worth to deal with if you havent already.

Anyways, the car will feel like much more faster after your map ;)

Yes got a graph, will have to dig it out as it was over 2 years ago when I had it mapped. :)

It will stay with an S3 so must be at least good 300bhp. :)

Any gearbox/drivetrain manufacturer would pay over ends for only 10-15% drivetrain loss. With quattro a good even and sensible number is 20% loss. Anything less and whoever says it are dreaming IMO.

If you are on a stock engine looking for a tune I'd say 300bhp is a high number, 280bhp a low one, both are reasonable and some of the difference can probably be explained by different atmospheric conditions, different dyno's and car health as well as tune aggressiveness and estimated drivetrain loss.

If you are worried about local tuners and their experience you could go with a safe off the shelf tune from e.g. ABT or Revo.

Edit to say, gearbox torque limits from what I've read:
S-tronic approx 550nm
ZF 6spd auto approx 700nm
Manual I think I recall seeing 900nm+

S-tronic is the most fragile but I've seen users running 700nm on it without it self-grenading so I think it depends a lot on how you use it. If you are going for race starts at every traffic light then obviously it won't last, but if you are sensible with how you apply power then you can make anything last longer.

Thanks for the comments guys. My car is an automatic 7-speed dual clutch S-Tronic.

I already have the mufflers gone, but no other mods to the exhaust.

The remap will largely depend on what does the diagnostics show. If the car is in good shape I will indeed remap it.

20% loss on quattros would result in approx. 191hp/400nm on wheels (239hp/500nm at drivetrain) with the stock fuel map, correct? Thus a decent number to get to (on wheels) would be 230ish hp/480ish nm.

If anyone can dig up an old graph we can compare it to my calculations here.

On another note, got my car treated with CeramicPro today, fairly happy with the result is an understatement. PFA

I got 259bhp and I think about 520Nm before the remap, but this is with same mod as you, no rear silencers.

The Bapro rolling road calculates the transmission loss and atmospheric pressure/weather to give the most accurate figures.

Good job and I see your numbers were bang on the ball park as suggested.

Went in to Surrey Rolling Road first thing today with my (stock CCWA 240hp) 3.0TDI quattro BSR custom remap (+BSR S-tronic remap & swirl-flaps delete) with catback exhaust- back boxes removed, K&N air filter with butterfly removed & Silicone airbox Turbo Intake Pipe fitted) and at 14 degrees ambient temp with V-Power in the tank my BSR results show 333hp & 570 ft lb / 770 N m.
Charlie said 'Bobby's signature is no smoke at all- he knows how to deliver the power without using any excess fuel'.
Couldn't be more pleased- the results just confirm the sheer joy of driving this machine, which is still averaging around 45mpg even with plenty of power bursts..
