if MPG is your main thing......then get a diesel. The 2.0Tdi, think its similar to the BMW 320d, 55 mpg.

Not sure what the MPG on 2.7Tdi is but the 3.0Tdi gives about 31 around town, 40 on motorways (31/40), so I can only imagine it being a little better, maybe 38/45.

TT vs A5, thats like comparing apples and oranges TBH.

I looked at the TT as a coupe. Im coming from an A3 and wanted a change of car. What I found with the TT is it costs more for me to insure (considered sports car) and slightly more to tax, even though some of the engines are used in the A5 anyway.
If you want a small compact sports car, then the TT. If you want something bigger with a brush of luxury then the A5. I think the A5 reminds me a bit like a sports touring car. Certainly does have the power.

I really think its a case of getting a coin and seeing which side the coin lands. The TT will be a bit more guzzly but not by much, than the A5. Depends how you want to drive both cars. I think the TT would be great just for flooring it everywhere...then again you could do it in the A5. I however, will prob be driving the A5 differently than the A3 for example. I personally went for the A5 simply for tax, insurance and space.

 

If u plan to go for an A5 dont buy the 2.7 tdi wich dosent get quattro alos, is just a waste of money! Go for the 3.0 tdi the difference is huge and mpg is also very good in the 3.0tdi! If its to expensvie or for whatever other reson u dont want the 3.0tdi the get the 2.0tfsi quattro.
The A5 is in another leage compared to the TT! Its much better looking first of all, the interior is much better then in the tt and u get much more space in the back and trunk wich can come handy.
The only TT i would ever consider chosing over and A5/S5 is the TT RS wich is a best!

 

I would agree that a FWD A5 is not a great option IMHO but if YOU like the drive why not.

The 3.0Tdi Quattro gives the best balance of performance and economy.

I have not driven a FWD TT or A5 that has been enjoyable. We had an 08 TT FWD 2.0TFsi for 6 months and hated it!

I traded my 08 3.2 V6 TT s-tronic quattro recently for a 2.7 tdi A5 sline cab. I am pleased with the swap. The main reason for me doing it was that I needed space in the back seats and you cant fit anyone bigger than a 10 year old in a TT.

The A5 is way more comfy and refined than a TT. The 2.7 diesel is very smooth especially with the multitronic gearbox. I miss the sound of the 3.2 V6 in my TT, but you are looking at a 2.0 so its different.

It probably depends on your height but I am 5'9'' and found the TT gave me back/leg ache which I just dont get in the supportive seats in the A5.

The TT was very quick but everyone always seems to want to race you in one! The A5 is not slow once you get it going past 10mph.

To be honest I find the grip very good in the A5 but you clearly cant throw it around like a TT. However, if anything, the A5 has less understeer than a TT. The ride is softer in an A5 with a bit of body roll. I have the sline and in the TT I had mag ride. There was no body roll whatsover if you engaged the sports setting.

The other bonus for me is that I was getting 22/30/25 town/cruise/average mpg in the TT, but now I get 33/43/37 mpg in the A5.

Both cars look great, but I can see why you pay a lot more for an A5.

My best friend has a TT. The lack of back seats makes the car really inconvenient. He wants to sell it and get an A5 Sportback. Don't buy a TT unless you are in your 20s!

 

+1 on the TT still being slightly feminine in its styling. It has improved and I think its a great looking car, but in my opinion the A5 is leaps and bounds ahead in the styling department and thats why I chose it.

 

Although not exactly the same models as your comparison, I have an A5 Coupe 2.0 TFSi 211bhp and my good wife has a TT Coupe 2.0TFSi 200bhp. Both cars are manual gearbox.
I would agree with most of the views above in so much as the TT is lighter / quicker but lacks space in back seat and the boot / trunk. The A5 can take 4 adults in comfort but the TT can only take two. Also the A5 has many more gadgets / equipment fitted.
A5 IMHO is classier and more comfortable but the TT is more economical - albeit going for a diesel option in the A5 would alter this.
It all depends on what you personally require from the car.
For example I can easily fit a set of golf clubs, trolley etc in the boot of the A5, where i have to fold the back seat down in the TT.
Although my wife's car has nice wheels etc on it, it still feels a bit more feminine than the A5 and there are loads of them about (no offence intended to anyone who has one).

Not sure on that one unless they are all little. I'm 1.90m+ and wouldn't want anyone sitting behind me for long. But then again anything is better than the back of a TT!!

I very nearly bought the TT but decided the A5 was the way to go for a more understated grown up car. Still like both but am pleased I chose the A5!

TT is chuckable little coupe, really is two seats only , doubt you will get 35mpg if you are driving it properly good fun if this is what you want.

A5 is a civilised larger coupe that is very easy to live with, all the more so for extended driving, best consdiered as a 2+2 (full size adults will fit in the back but is pretty cramped) . very much the GT and quite readily will turn in 37-40mpg. Would agree to go for the 3.0Tdi quattro if you can find one in your budget. Best performance/economy ratio of them all imho. 2.7TDi/mutltronic super smooth cruiser but not as sharp as some variants.

 

2.7 as Gruffle has said is super smooth. Having a cab it's heavier than the coupe but gives the option of getting the roof down for some fresh air motoring :thumbsup:. Overall, great car to live with daily and is quicker than most people think.

As you have said your main needs are MPG, I regulary AVG over 40MPG with mixed driving. That said, I've set myself a task this week to see just what i could get from a tankful. 60 miles left in the tank (DIS reading) and have covered 530 miles so far (mainly motorways). Knocking on the door of 600 miles from a tankful, not too shabby for a V6:cheers:

I would agree that the FWD in a Cab is better than Coupe probably due to weight. My old A43.0Cab was FWD but never really handled that well TBH (sold 6 years ago and memory fading).

Why drive slow with roof down Chris... nothing nicer than a blast with the hood down and wind deflector in place!!

Cruise along enjoying the sunshine! My normal journey to/from work is dual carriage ways and motorways. If the weather is warm and dry then I drop the roof and take the A/B road route home. Takes 10-15 minutes longer, but that’s not an issue!

I never had an issue with handling on my A4 Cab 2.4V6 FWD. Though it is a big lump of an engine!

 

Like Audi Bairn, I have both the A (S) 5 and the Missus's TT Roadster (2.0T manual) to sample and yes, despite the threat to my perceived masculinity, I regularly borrow the TT (particularly of late as said Missus has been unable to drive it due to a foot op.).

I'm always impressed by the TT and find the experience compared to the S5 like light and day. It's responsive, chuckable, grippy, reasonably performant and has a lovely rorty exhaust note (2.0T) and frankly, I don't consider the practical aspects 'cos I've the S if I want to take more than 2 people anywhere. Which I try not to. Many will know that the TT 2.0T is generally seen as the pick of the range and has for many years held the crown in the mid-range roadster market - it's a regular 4-star car in reviews, and I can easily appreciate why.

Economy-wise, I've typically seen high 20s but then again, when I take it, it's primarily to blow the cobwebs out of it - her daily commute is 2 miles each way and the car is rarely warmed-up; checking her average consumption recently, it was sitting at the same high-twenties mark.

In short - I find the A and the TT pretty different in driver feel (FWD/AWD notwithstanding) - the S5 feels somewhat cumbersome when I get back into it and lacks the finesse of the TT. I personally wouldn't have bought an A5 - it was the S that inspired me purely because of the V8. However, faced with the same A vs. TT dilemma as the OP, I could easily have gone with the TT (petrol, manual, of course) as frankly, it's a better handling car. You can't avoid the 'image' question when considering cars like this and only you can anticipate what either car might 'say about you'. The A5 is perhaps seen as the more mature choice, and is undoubtedly a looker, but the TT range's image has been bolstered by the arrival of the S & RS models and it's still wearing its looks with confidence after 4 years or so.
