Keyless entry not working!

Since owning my car for a month now I noticed the keyless entry doesn't work as I have always been used to using the remote to lock and unlock my car.

I have looked at the door handle and there is a 1cm by 1cm black square on it, and I believe you have to press this for a second before the car opens.

Any ideas on what could be faulty and is this an expensive fix , as if it is I'll leave it to using the key as I have be.

I didn't buy my car from Audi so although have a 6 month warranty I know they won't fix this.

See car's manual first.
Keyless entry doesn't work, in many cases one door handle is wrong, new one is around 40 pounds.

that little 1cm by 1cm square is to lock the car, to open it you simply place you hand around the handle and it automatically opens.

As Stencil says, do you have the advanced key option?

Does your A5 have a start/stop button next to the gear stick?

Advanced Key allows you to keep the key in your pocket and never plug it in, as long as it's on you or in your bag in the car you can lock, unlock and start the car without doing anything with the key.

If you do have advanced key, yes, just putting your hand on the handles locks/unlocks.

If that's not working, as mine didn't when I first had it, chances are the sensors have gone. Usually the early models fail because of poor design - rain etc gets into the handle.

The boot/truck sensor is internal so doesn't break so easily. Check it's not something more serious by testing to see if you can open the boot/trunk. With the car locked and the key in your pocket, just walk up to the boot and try to open it.

If that works, the door sensors have gone - It's a simple and relatively cheap fix.

Sorry, but yes I do have the advanced key and the stop start button on the centre console. I walked up to my car just now and put my hand on the top of the door handle and not the side, and the doors unlocked so it does seem to work.

However when I shut the door and tried to touch the handle in the same place it did not lock, So I touched the 1cm x 1cm black square on the door it still did not lock which I found odd, so I had to lock with the key.

So so far it unlocks fine, but does not seem to lock, am I a retard or just not doing something right lol...................?

Could be you're hitting it wrong - don't keep your fingers on the inside of the handle as that's where it gets unlocked.

To isolate the problem, try the door on the passenger side and see if that one locks. If so, you've got a bad sensor on the driver side.

Hi all, I am new to the A5 world. Very interesting read, can I just clarify how you know if you have advanced keyless entry?

My A5 is a 57 plate, I have a start stop engine button in mine that works. Also have little 1cm x 1cm rectangle on door handles but cannot get these to unlock car at all. Nor can I unlock the boot.

Either I dont have the advanced keyless entry or possible sensors gone by sounds of it with age of car.

I have a 2 month other franchise dealer warranty for parts & labour though so I'm hoping I might be able to get fixed.

Driver and passenger doors not working is fairly common. However, if your boot is not working either this may suggest something a little more sinister.

To be clear, if you approach your boot with the key in your pocket and grab the boot handle, nothing happens?

You may wish to try the same using your spare key... or try replacing the battery in your key before investigating anything more sinister.

Thanks mab, I will give the spare key a try and replace the batteries in both keys and see if I can get anything to happen first.

#12 ·
Sorry for the delay. Strange outcome so far, tried new batteries in both keys. Firstly then tried the spare key and was able to open door fine and boot. Car would not lock though with keyless. Later tried other key, only boot would open. Over a few days kept trying different options.

Basically now, can only open boot with both keys. Got the driver door to open twice in the first day but never again. Assume likely to be both door sensors.

One faulty door sensor means neither door will open - boot is separate.

Ideally you need to use vagcom to identify the fault codes which will explain whether you have one or two faulty sensors. Failing that, you could simply replace both.

They're around ÂŁ60-ÂŁ70 a pop from your local dealer... who will try to tell you that they are only sold as a pair (incorrect) and both need to be replaced (often not the case).

Popped into the local dealer today, he confirmed likely both door sensors. Fingers crossed will get both replaced under warranty from buying the car.

Thanks for the help guys, looks like an issue I might have again in the future judging by the amount of times others have had replaced.

Not yet, unfortunately I got the car from Arnold Clark, with their 2 months parts & labour warranty been trying to get it fixed. Its like trying to pull teeth getting work done from them after they have your money. They are pricing it up via Audi today, but expecting more resistance on getting it fixed.

Keyless Go?

Is keyless entry known as 'keyless go'? :help:

I do not have an Advanced key / start stop button but have sensors fitted to the handles.

I have this listed in my handbook as a fitted extra however it doesnt seem to work so I must have dodgy sensors too.

I didn't think you could spec keyless entry without keyless start. I thought there was only 1 option for keyless and that was advanced key (keyless entry and start).

How do you know you've got the sensors fitted to the handles? Have you taken the handles off and actually seen the sensors?

Cheers for that info.

I only had the car a couple of days before going abroad to work so I didnt get chance to investigate much hence my questions on the forum.

My book has the option code 4K4 listed which is 'Central locking with radio remote control and Keyless Go'

Oh right fair do's, well that's why this forum is here

I'm not to sure about the option codes but after searching on the web I don't think option 4K4 is for keyless entry:

Cheers I was using an app called MACO on my phone which is meant to tell you what the codes mean..... it appears that it may not be 100% accurate! Thats where I got the information from. Should have stuck to good old Google.

Thanks for all your help.

Finally after a year lol I managed to get round to fixing the keyless entry.

Well Audi vwsc in harrow fixed it, they replaced the right had sensor as well as door lock as that was knackered (for the last week I was getting in and out by putting down first).

All in for ÂŁ350 incl vat and now the keyless entry is working perfectly.

As I walk up to the car I put my hand over the handle and the door unlocks.

Once I leave the car I simply touch the square on the door handle and it locks.

It really is a nice touch.
