Hello,

I already searched the forums and nothing showed up.......I am looking to find out if anyone knows which color wires are for ignition and ground in the wiring that leads to the rearview mirror. I know I can use a multimeter and figure it out but I don't have one. I plan on using the existing wiring that already leads up to the rearview mirror to hook up my Escort Radar Detector. I did the same in my last car and it worked out well.

I just picked up my car (I will get pix up soon) and I need to get it hooked up as soon as possible or I'm gonna get a ticket......This car floats on the highway.....

timmuhlbradt, I was trying to do the same thing - but I couldn't find the wiring information - I ended up running the wire to the fuse box on the driver side, from the Escort I run the wire up and under the headliner and down the A pillar, it's really a piece of cake.

does anyone have tips on taking off the fuse panel? there seems to be a notch near the bottom to stick a flat head screwdriver but i still feel like im going to break something.

thats exactly how you do it. and just pull. i felt the same way but it was fine once i started yanking on it.

and thanks bb vign for the write up. did exactly the same but got to lazy to hide the entire wire along the pillar/bottom of windshield.

If you're going to be doing any wiring projects like this, there's no reason not to have a multimeter. They aren't very expensive (perfectly serviceable models are at Radio Shack for $20), and they are an indispensible tool for figuring out just these kinds of questions. It would be a trivial exercise to figure out which wires in that area are ignition powered, which are battery powered, and which are continuous with body ground.

The best I can tell you is that ground wires in Audi/VW systems are typically brown. Tha'ts not without exception, as they use other colors sometimes. But if you see a brown wire, it's a safe bet that it's a ground wire.
