So I've had a developing whiring noise the last few weeks and a squeal under low rev load.
I thought it was Aux belt and wheel bearing, but after Audi checked it out, they told me there's some slight movement out of tolerance in my transmission plate, and that I might have a bearing going on my nsf drive shaft output.
Unfortunately, these noises can't be pinpointed so although these issues are identified, Audi dont know if either of these issues are serious enough to make a noise, and they couldn't be replicated in the ramp, just on a road test.
Does anyone have any experience with such issues?
For background: car is 3.0 TDI, tiptronic 140,000mi, both front driveshafts and main prop shaft replaced at 101,000mi. Driveshaft owing to CV joint failing, propshaft owing to central bearing failing.
Gearbox oil changed at 110,000 mi.

This is the open inspection plate of where I'm taking about. The output shaft on the left is the NSF driveshaft.

Better view of inside the inspection plate.

Audi tech pointing at the interior and saying that there's movement within there which shouldn't be there.

Could be a tyre. I had one starting to delaminate and it sounded like a wheel bearing failing. New tyre, no more noise
My tyres are all between 2 and 4mm and are PS4s, so they are due replacing soon. But I don't think it's that.
I have an independent VAG specialist just up the road from me, so at some point I'll book it in with them for investigation. It just feels like a lot of money to be throwing into not a lot of output, even though it needs to be done.

Well, here's an update - I've opted to replace my tyres (PS4 4mm front, 2mm rear, to PS4S) as where I'm working now is much wetter and I needed the extra tread. Plus kwikfit has a 15% off when you buy all 4.
Since then, the noise has either changed and I haven't noticed it yet, or gone.
Very interesting.
I'll be getting that "longitudinal movement" in the transmission plate checked out by my local VAG garage.

My drone was from 30mph, but you guys might be onto something with the part worn PS4 tyres.

Update after having had the new tyres on for 1200mi - the whiring drone was the old PS4 tyres.
