Spec headlights( turn signal ) since it has to be a yellow.
And does the colored bulb show when not on??

Main reason for asking is because of the US regulations and come time for inspection I don't want to go through the hassle of replacing the units

You don't need to worry about changing out your turn signal bulbs with the Euro spec headlight housings. They are the same as US spec turn signals. When the turn signal is off, that entire section/strip of the headlight housing has a subtle amber hue as shown in the attached pic. You're not able to see the actual bulb that lights up that turn signal strip.
