Hi all,

Had a “Barry fault, alternator not charging battery” thing flash up on my dash after starting the car.

clearly need to get it diagnosed, which will involve driving/getting the car to a garage.

knowing the battery could go flat while driving, would it be fair to say this wouldn’t be safe as I’d loose all electrics mid journey which is a massive safety risk?

Just seems strange to have to get the car towed there while I can still start it.

when the battery dies, while driving, the car will defenitively come to a stand stil.
however the amount of energy to keep the car going is only a fraction of what you need to start the enige.
so, if it is not very far, I would take the chance.

thank you that makes sense. No guarantees, but how “not very far” would you think? My normal German specialist garage is a 4.5 mile drive away which id prefer to go to, but there are some sub 2 miles

If the car battery is that weak as you say then it would not be strong enough to start the car.
You can purchase a cheap trickle charger from eBay for £20..Do a full charge and make the journey

As long as that fault description is accurate, that the alternator is working but the BMS has decided that there is a problem that requires disabling the charging, then as long as the car starts it should run fine, certainly for 4.5 miles.

Yeah it’s not even a direct fault code, it’s a clear error read exactly like that right in the middle screen of the Speedo.
I’ve charged the battery to full (was at 40%) but the warning remains so have it booked in with an indi on Wednesday for investigation
