To remap or not remap...Diesel (3.0 Tdi)

Hi all,

Just looking for some advice from anyone that that has already remapped their 3.0 TDi. I've had previous Petrol cars remapped (TVR Cerbera, VX220 Turbo, Audi S3) with great success, however never remapped a diesel. One concern when speaking to a friend who'd previous remapped his golf TDi was black smoke out the exhaust and issues with sensors?!?! Not sure if he just had a dodgy car or a bad map....but wanted to ask about any personal experiences?

I'm in Edinburgh, Scotland so planning to use Angel Tuning if I go ahead as they did the S3 and was delighted with the results....however happy to take advice if anyone better out there in the area.

Thanks,

Not sure why you wouldn't tbh. It's almost free horsepower.

Your 3.0 Tdi will come with a particulate filter and you won't have any soot or black smoke out of your exhaust unless you have an incredibly shitty map or a faulty filter. I suspect sensor issues would only relate to already worn/faulty sensors or a bad map. I've had mine remapped for 4 years and not had any issues.

Expect about 40bhp and some extra torque.

Regards

So did you get a dyno run with the official numbers or is it just plug something in have a play and:"you have extra 50bhp now" - says Paul?
It all comes down to the price and if its considerably cheaper than you would pay for a dyno run etc. And youre not too fussed about declaring that when you sell your car then i suppose its worth it, but otherwise i would be questioning it;)

No dyno, although there is a RR here in Edinburgh and they have an offer on at the moment so will probably take it down one day and a few runs and print outs.

I can definitely feel the difference post re-map....in both standard and sports mode. Whether it makes the claimed figures remains to be seen but i'll post the results after I get the RR runs done.

I've taken pics of the pre-remap MPG and will monitor this weekend when I go for a proper drive. I've only been out a couple of times since the remap (as I walk to work) and my right foot was a bit heavier than usual so a bit unfair to judge. I'll monitor under normal driving conditions and report back.

Not managed a RR run yet due to the xmas holidays, however went camping up in Comrie which is about 90 mins drive from home for the last few days. Not sure how accurate the average MPG readout is in the car, however.....38.6. Seems very high. Whether the readout is accurate or not, it's still about 8MPG higher post remap.

I was also driving normally rather than trying to go easy on the right foot. (sitting about 70-75..overtaking). In terms of distance
, the journey was about 95% motorway / 3% A road and 2% city.

I'll keep monitoring and next long drive, i'll fill the tank at the start and end of the journey and get an accurate reading.

I did get a yellow engine warning light on the short drive to the shops when I got home so will need to get that looked at.

With any luck that code is just something minor like the swirl flaps.

Interested to see if that 8mpg difference holds true - i'm looking into getting mine remapped in feb when the warranty expires and as it is now i can squeeze about 40-42mpg out of it from london to lincoln if i'm being good - well, as far as the dash tells me anyway, i don't fancy the hassle of working it out with a pen and paper. MPG plummets like a pidgeon strapped to a brick if i touch the throttle.
Pretty sure mine is still on the stock map but, haven't had the time to take it down to a 4 wheel dyno so i'm none the wiser.

Good luck with your motor, keep us in the loop.

RR booked for Thursday this week so will post the results. Also did a 60mile motorway journey and reset the average MPG once I was up to speed and then noted the result as I was pulling into the city.....44.5mpg. I found that using cruise control rather than my weighty right foot seems to help a lot ;-) Cruise was set to 72 mph. That's what the dash is saying anyway and if close to that then I'm delighted given the size of the engine.

The engine warning light went out all by itself after a week. Could have been the fuel filler cap?! but will keep an eye on it.

I did plug in the cheapo diagnostic device to the OBD port and saw the following code P2016 - Intake Manifold Runner Position Sensor / switch circuit low bank 1a

Those figures sound like mine!

Around town, with out too much stop start it will get up to 30mpg.

75mph gives 44-45mpg

Driving on A roads without much traffic or stopping will give high 30s or just into the 40s.

PS my car is remapped and was after about 3 months of owning it, so can't comment on the difference.

Mine was rolling roaded before and after remap - 310bhp and 480ft/lbs (643Nm)

Your mpg shouldn't alter much with like for like driving and sometimes can actually improve. You also don't know how accurate your display is without actually measuring the amount of fuel used against distance travelled, so I shouldn't get too concerned with those figures anway.
Enjoy the dyno experience it's good fun and those figures are the ones you're really interested in. ?

my MPG figures do check out, i averaged 36.6 to a tank on the display and calculated it as 36.1, which is within an acceptable margin of error. dyno time will be plenty of fun though, shame i'm going to have to go a way afield as there's no places near me with a 4 wheel dyno

Just to add mine still has DPF! :)

If you have access to VCDS you can run a live data recording and the auto tip box will measure torque, this will show whether you have the stock 500nm or if it is mapped it will show over 600NM. I got mine to 620Nm using VCDS and going for a drive. :)

But the Dyno will confirm for sure.

I had my remap done by awsomegti (via my audi specialist garage)
A5 2014 3L TDI
I didn't get the rolling road test. Its extra money and as long as you know its been done properly (not just some off the shelf map) which I know it was , my advice was why stress your engine to the very max just for a bit of paper?

I'm confused.
How can it not be an "off the shelf map" if it wasn't produced on a rolling road?

#29 ·
Exactly, So how are the tweaks to the custom map tested if not road tested or rolling roaded. The rolling road will show where extra fuel, timing etc adjustments can be altered in the map. Without actually 'driving' the car how can a custom map be validated, surely the custom bits need testing, or if they know those custom bits of the map are good to go, then you're back in generic tried and tested territory, all in my opinion of course? :)

Awesome GTi are/were an APR franchise, so know what they are doing. :)

Running the car on a rolling road won't put any extra stress on the car, infact, it's probably less stress than you booting it down the road, hitting bumps or whatever.

Dave this is what I thought too.
Like when the guys were mapping mine they did a stock run to see how the engine was performing and what power it made in the first place.
Then they did several more runs and tweaks each time and the power went up and up.
I don't know how that could've been done without a rolling road.
Besides who doesn't want to know what power figures their car is making?
Sounds to me for the 85 quid extra someone was just being tight.
Also agree with you about the rolling road, it's not like you aren't going to put your foot down on the actual road.

#31 ·
Yeah I had mine done at More-BHP too on that very Bapro roller!

I got my rolling road bit nearly for free as I had been to Jason before with my old A4. Think they did 4 or 5 runs in total, pre and post mapping.

What figures did you get and what mods?

#33 ·
Ah, I thought from your name 'Smokey' you had a diesel! :)

Yeah I got 260bhp 400lbs/ft before with just back box delete, then 310bhp and 485lb/ft after remap.

The SC 3.0 V6 looks to be a good tunable engine! I'm even contemplating an S% for my TDi replacement :) Some say it's better than the RS5, but without the nice V8 noise!

With the pulley upgrades 500bhp is achievable :)

#34 ·
It is a very tune happy motor. A good stage 1 makes similar power to the RS but with more torque. Start doing pulleys and intakes etc there's even more power to be had.
They do sound good in my opinion but definitely not as good as an RS.
Also you might get a bit more power from your S but you will never get that awesome sense of occasion that an RS gives everytime you get in one.
The S is still a great car though and I do really enjoy it.

My remap was done by Unicorn Motor Developments in Stockport. Custom map done on a rolling road, went from 255hp and 404Ft/lbs to 320hp and 500Ft/lbs, totally stock, running on Shell V Power. Took a good few hours, no noticeable difference in mpg but a massive difference when you put your foot down! ÂŁ400 well spent.

That's a good result! Most generic remapper say about 290bhp for the 3.0tdi.

Yeah, I've heard good thing from Rick at Unicorn. My brother has been there a few times. He had his map tweaked to reduce the torque a bit as the clutch on A3 TDi 170s are on the limit when remapped. Then went again after the DPF failed, had it removed, but it smoked a bit too much, so toned down the smoke levels. :)

I'd like to get mine on a different rolling road to see what it produces as a comparison.

Was also thinking of seeing if they can do a TCU remap on a tip-tronic, I know they do DSGs/S-tronic remaps. I think my Tiptronic would benefit and make the car feel faster with some tweaks!
