To remap or not remap...Diesel (3.0 Tdi)

Hi all,

Just looking for some advice from anyone that that has already remapped their 3.0 TDi. I've had previous Petrol cars remapped (TVR Cerbera, VX220 Turbo, Audi S3) with great success, however never remapped a diesel. One concern when speaking to a friend who'd previous remapped his golf TDi was black smoke out the exhaust and issues with sensors?!?! Not sure if he just had a dodgy car or a bad map....but wanted to ask about any personal experiences?

I'm in Edinburgh, Scotland so planning to use Angel Tuning if I go ahead as they did the S3 and was delighted with the results....however happy to take advice if anyone better out there in the area.

Thanks,

Those figures sound like mine!

Around town, with out too much stop start it will get up to 30mpg.

75mph gives 44-45mpg

Driving on A roads without much traffic or stopping will give high 30s or just into the 40s.

PS my car is remapped and was after about 3 months of owning it, so can't comment on the difference.

Mine was rolling roaded before and after remap - 310bhp and 480ft/lbs (643Nm)
Great figures on the RR. If I can get close to that i'll be delighted. I'll have to wait though as the local RR is now broken and they're awaiting a part. Will be late next week now...

RR booked for Thursday this week so will post the results. Also did a 60mile motorway journey and reset the average MPG once I was up to speed and then noted the result as I was pulling into the city.....44.5mpg. I found that using cruise control rather than my weighty right foot seems to help a lot ;-) Cruise was set to 72 mph. That's what the dash is saying anyway and if close to that then I'm delighted given the size of the engine.

The engine warning light went out all by itself after a week. Could have been the fuel filler cap?! but will keep an eye on it.

I did plug in the cheapo diagnostic device to the OBD port and saw the following code P2016 - Intake Manifold Runner Position Sensor / switch circuit low bank 1a

Not managed a RR run yet due to the xmas holidays, however went camping up in Comrie which is about 90 mins drive from home for the last few days. Not sure how accurate the average MPG readout is in the car, however.....38.6. Seems very high. Whether the readout is accurate or not, it's still about 8MPG higher post remap.

I was also driving normally rather than trying to go easy on the right foot. (sitting about 70-75..overtaking). In terms of distance
, the journey was about 95% motorway / 3% A road and 2% city.

I'll keep monitoring and next long drive, i'll fill the tank at the start and end of the journey and get an accurate reading.

I did get a yellow engine warning light on the short drive to the shops when I got home so will need to get that looked at.

How has your mpg been since the remap? Noticed much difference?
I've taken pics of the pre-remap MPG and will monitor this weekend when I go for a proper drive. I've only been out a couple of times since the remap (as I walk to work) and my right foot was a bit heavier than usual so a bit unfair to judge. I'll monitor under normal driving conditions and report back.

So did you get a dyno run with the official numbers or is it just plug something in have a play and:"you have extra 50bhp now" - says Paul?
It all comes down to the price and if its considerably cheaper than you would pay for a dyno run etc. And youre not too fussed about declaring that when you sell your car then i suppose its worth it, but otherwise i would be questioning it;)
No dyno, although there is a RR here in Edinburgh and they have an offer on at the moment so will probably take it down one day and a few runs and print outs.

I can definitely feel the difference post re-map....in both standard and sports mode. Whether it makes the claimed figures remains to be seen but i'll post the results after I get the RR runs done.

Thanks all. Dropped a text to Paul from Angel Tuning Scotland yesterday and turns out he's mapping a car round the corner from me at 13:00 today. Got a tidy discount for going ahead today to save him coming back at a later date. Bonus. Looking forward to going for a drive later :)

Not sure why you wouldn't tbh. It's almost free horsepower.

Your 3.0 Tdi will come with a particulate filter and you won't have any soot or black smoke out of your exhaust unless you have an incredibly shitty map or a faulty filter. I suspect sensor issues would only relate to already worn/faulty sensors or a bad map. I've had mine remapped for 4 years and not had any issues.

Expect about 40bhp and some extra torque.

Regards
Brilliant thanks. That's exactly what I was after.
