Getting this come up on dis, tank malfunction, fuel gauge reads empty & mile left reads 0 miles
Then may all clear after a while.
Is it best to just replace the whole float / sender bit that's in the top of the tank?
I removed rear seat & cover, all plug seem clean contacts, couldn't unscrew unit read may have to tap with a hammer & wood block
2007 3.0tdi if any one else has has same issue

I had a B5 S4 and although I never got the problem I was aware that the B5 had a "known" failure mode with the tank sensor. IIRC it required replacement. I'm not sure if your 2007 model could be suffering the same.

If you read my build thread bone's a5, I think I've sorted it yesterday, sender & level under rear seat & also a level under a panel in the boot floor, cleaned both sensors

I tried removing the locking ring with a pry bar and hammer but it wouldn’t budge, however just violently knocking it about has managed to get it working again. I’ve now bought a four jaw removal tool and left the plate off without resealing it, incase it starts to play up again.

I had this recently on 3.0. Tried cleaning the connector contacts and mine still indicated 0 miles tank range.

if you have VCDS you can view the feedback resistance which it must be between a certain range in ohms.

unfortunately mine still didn’t play ball so I ordered a replacement level sender and replaced it.

my advice to anyone considering the replacement or removal and clean up/test, invest in the tool with the claws use a breaker bar and push down and anti clockwise at the same time. Also ensure you have a minimum amount of fuel and avoid attempting to chisel the spigot round.

initially I was told by my local garage the hammer chisel method bust when it came down to it it started damaging the fins of the spigot. Also openup the fuel tank-cap to attempt to relieve pressure. Plenty of guides online for the job which really helped me out.
