squeaking driver window grinding a line into the glass

I picked up my new A5 yesterday and it's great as everyone here knows but there's a terrible squeaking noise when the drivers window rolls up and down when you open and close the door.

I've only rolled down/up the window all the way once so far and it also made the noise then.

I decided to clean the window this morning to see if that helped and I noticed that there is a small vertical line that seems to have been ground into the glass from what ever it causing the noise about 10 cm from the back of the window.

The audi dealer is closed for the long weekend so it will be a few days before I can get the car in. Does any one have any ideas I can try? Whatever is causing it seems to be down a bit in the door.

It sucks because the line is just small enough that it's not worth replacing the window for but it will bug me on the new car.

forgot to add the line is on the outside of the window.
Interesting - mine's doing this too although I haven't yet got any noticeable scratches on the window. I had assumed it was a piece of grit that had got stuck and that a wash may help resolve things. I've washed the car today so will see how things are tomorrow.
You could try laying something flat and metallic on the glass where the scratch is and holding it in position whilst lowering the window - a steel rule or even steel tape without the end-stop might suffice.

There is a possibility that this will dislodge the item... although if it meets too much resistance, don't push it, in case you damage something entirely different.

Alternatively, duct-tape could do a similar job in a more subtle manner?
mine has a lightly scratched vertical line but i thought this is maybe because i have tinted windows. the extra layer getting scratched
Mine also squeak, although I've not noticed any lines... "yet".

Anyone else noticed that after it rains, for a few weeks of dry weather, every time you put your window down it gets soaking wet?
Glad I'm not alone.

Has anyone taken their car into the dealer about the squeak yet? My squeak is unbearably loud. I dread opening my car door. I'll be calling the service dept the minute they open tomorrow.

I don't have a metal ruler thin enough but I might try duck tape.

that sounds like you have a problem,
Actually, all of the stories make me wonder if there is a bigger problem going on here. Especially rob1234, you definitely have a problem.
I have the car booked in tomorrow morning so I'll let you guys know what happens.
guys. i had the same problem and i managed to figure out what it was. the seal on the outside of the window is quite wide and i actually had a stone just underneath the rubber seal which was scraping the window everytime i lowered it - try pulling back the seal and getting all the debris out - it worked on mine and now its fine....
If it's on the outside, then yes it's probably a piece of debris under the seal. I too have tinted windows and only on the drivers side, there is a verticle line.

This line is on the inside and you can feel the scratch with your finger nail. This to me seemes to be a roller mechanism that raises/lowers the window. The odd part is this is only my drivers side and not the passenger side.

Anybody else?
Got the car back. He said there was a tab sticking out in the door that had some sand caught in it. He bent the tab in and said if it starts again he'd have to take the door apart.

Good news is the noise is gone. Bad news is he didn't fix the scratch and it is now longer (probably from opening/closing it when he was testing it out) and he also scratched up the window a little while fixing it (very minor, you wouldn't be able to tell except that your face is 2 inches away from the window when you're driving).

He said he couldn't see a scratch but I could bring the car back if I want and they'll take a look.

Anyone know of a good glass polish I can try to get rid of the scratches?
Update: Good news. After trying Autosol and toothpaste which did nothing to the scratches I had the car in today for the headlight problem mentioned in my other thread and I brought up that the scratches were still there and they said they'd take a look. I just got a call and they are replacing the whole window for me.
I have the same thing. A vertical line on the inside scratched into the window from top to bottom. Its quite noticable so something quite sharp is doing this. Need to take it into the car dealer
I had the same thing, I would recommend simply taking it to your dealership. I don't know what mine had done, but since then my window never made that noise again.
I have that line to. I also thought that it's because i have tinted windows.

Also, when i wash my car, a couple of drops of water get on the inside of the window, on the superior back corner.
I don't have that problem but I do have a problem with my windows in the cold and frosty mornings.

When you open the door the window does not drop down due to the frost so when you close the door it does not close because the window is to high. anyone else have that problem or is it just a problem in a cold and frosty Scotland!!!!:(

Several folks have mentioned that same problem. There's actually an entire thread on it. (See this thread.)
o have the squeaky noise and whenever i put my window down after washing it gets soaked.....thought the squeak was from the tints aswell, but my car is going in for service this week and i will get them to take a look at it
