Hey guys,

My S5 arrives in a week and a half (Phantom black on black, loaded :) I have booked in with the local tuner to get the Milltek exhaust installed and I am looking at some customs rims but to the reason for the post I have been cruising the radar detector/ laser jammer forums trying to figure out what "the best" system out there is.

I was wondering if any of you have any of these devices installed. Ideally I would like to have everything integrated (i.e. concealed) but would compromise on having the radar detector exposed if the performance was that much better.

Thoughts? Experience with your S5? Deep knowledge on the subject?

Thanks Fella's!

Radar Detector

I bought the top of the line Escort (9500i) with blue readout a week before delivery of my S5. It has all radar bands plus laser.
The blue readout is easier to read than the red one. It costs $50.00 (U.S.) more than the red readout though I can't figure out why! It saved me a ticket the day my car was delivered.
A local dealer said a "hard" install would cost about $130.00 (U.S.) which includes a new cord. The cord is a must since it has an button which will eliminate warnings from building systems.
The system has GPS installed for speed purposes and flashes your mph when it goes off. The GPS allows you to pinpoint fixed installation radars (burgler alarms, door openers, etc.) for elimination so as to not drive you crazy.
I have been using Escorts since 1986 and the only problem I have ever had is getting one stolen.
Check out the escort web site.

After 25+ tickets I have found the best thing to keep from getting tickets. Best thing is it is already installed in the car. Cruise control. I know it sounds harsh but it really works. A bit of proper planning (leaving 5 minutes earlier) will get you where you need to go. Otherwise use your eyes to look way down the road. Brake lights on the highway are a good sign of a officer running radar, common spots you see them on your commute (slow down before you get there), etc. BTW, I have an use a Valentine1 when the need arises.

Why don't you just crash the party and ruin all the fun dad:) Just kidding. I couldn't agree more.

Thanks guys- I actually went and joined a forum for radar/ laser fanatics and there was tons of good info. It sounds like the latest and greatest is the Escort 9500CI (next gen of the one previously mentioned). Looks like it will cost somewhere south of 2K installed and serves double duty as a radar detector and laser jammer plus a ton of other cool features like built in intelligence coupled with GPS to learn all of the "false alerts" that you continually pass by. It is fully integrated/ concealed which is a big plus IMO.

The laser jammers haven't been tested yet but are the subject of much hype. I am gonna take the plunge. I will let you all know how it goes.

As far as slowing down goes that most certainly is the most sensible thing to do. I am rarely sensible and lean heavily towards the enlightenment via excess philosophy. In other words F-that!

Happy motoring fella's!

From my experience so far, I have the Valentine 1 installed, without X band and K band turned off (no more false signals). It never detects local police, which is mostly city driving where you don't speed. On the freeway, the Highway Patrol cars are most of the time detected if they have their radar on, but sometimes, they have it off. I say about 75-80% of Highway Patrol are detected this way.

There are just those bad days where your speed and line of vision misses a parked or hidden behind a big rig in the right lane patrol car.

Overall, the only 100% sure way is for someone to place homing beacons on every single police and patrol vehicle, and someone sells the GPS detection for it in the black market. Has anyone else had this idea? I'm sure you have!

Wow, X and K turned off. In NJ, cops on the Garden State Parkway went back to x band because everyone with a radar detector ignores it. Cop almost got me the other day. Luckily I paid attention the the brake lights.
