This is normal but for most of us it is a niggle.

When all your other lights are off the DRLs are bright. The assumption is that it's daytime and your DRLs need to be bright so that they can be seen.

If you switch the side lights on (or the light sensor does it for you) then dimmed DRLs become the front lights. It kind of makes sense ... you're expected to do this when it gets darker hence the front DRLs don't need to be so bright (they can dazzle other drivers in the dark).

The simple rule is that if you have your rear lights on then the DRLs will be dim. Switch the tail lights off and the front DRLs are bright.

There are plenty of posts here about changing this behaviour so that the DRLs stay bright (requires VAGCOM)

Oh bugger ... my two young sons and I were wondering what those were and we had identified them as lasers but we just couldn't find the option in the MMI to fire them. They're gonna be kind of disappointed when they find out they're just lights :(
