This isn't going to be anything quick in build thread terms, it will be updated as and when.

Had an 2008 A5 3.0tdi Coupe for 3 years and loved every minute, well technically I've still got as not sold yet lol

she was standard bar a full Miltek but 30,000 miles on an already high mileage (now 163,000 miles) I didn't fancy putting any money into and I missed the Audi V8, so what was a boy to do?

yup....



picked her up today, 2007 S5, V8... manual with 73,000 miles, not perfect but good condition, Meteor Grey with the light cream leather interior... Totally standard but won't stay that way

I don't like the chrome, doesn't work with the grey paint IMHO

Wow! It looks stunning! It seems you got a great find as the milage seems low for car thats nearly 11 years old.
She is in really good condition, but not how I want her... yet

just hatching the plan (whilst letting the bank balance recover lol)

definitely needs an exhaust making
i'm looking for a replacement rear diffuser, (not a carbon one)
I want to wrap (or replace) the chrome trim with black items
lowering springs and wheel spacers.
door handles with RS5 types
and swap out the brushed aluminium interior bits with either Piano Black or Carbon.

That's about 3 years worth of stuff lol

so.... vibration is getting annoying but am parking that for now whilst parts are on order

I am sure my neighbours think i'm weird sitting in the car on the driveway sat on my laptop, they must think it's some real funky porn..!!!
So time to turn stuff on (not with the bloody porn, filthy minds) and turn stuff off....
Where would we be without Vag-Com

So what has been activated
Adaptive brake lights - turned on (I doubt i'll ever see them)
Optical Rear Parking - turned on
Lap timer - turned on
Enable Horn confirmation on locking - turned on
Enable Rear Tail Lights on with DRLs - turned on
Enable Release Parking Brake without putting foot on Brake - turned on

Specific fog light on when turning - turned off (why give the impression you have a bulb out? don't get it!!!)

Coding won't accept the hidden menu so need to look into that
Battery meter won't turn on so need to look into that

Things to do list is growing (hence the Slow Burn title)

building the parts list to make a decent exhaust, basic spec so far is 100 cel race cats, 3" dowpipes into a 2.5" x piped system, with centre resonators and backbox with 3.5" tails (so it'll look stock ish) but spec may change
different rear diffuser
remap (not for an increase in bhp but improves throttle response and removes the speed limiter.
MMI joystick buttons need replacing, the ones in the repair kits on ebay look different so need to do more homework to see if they are suitable.
Eibach springs
Wheel Spacers, already sent drawings to the machine shop (20mm front, 25mm rear)
Ordered some vinyl to "black chrome" the window trim and grill surround

Paintwork needs a good detail, claying and sealing with Gtechniq C2.

The list will grow......

Looking through the vehicles history someone has been hunting for this vibration before with no success, I knew the propshaft had been replaced as had seen that on the initial inspection, but less than 2000 miles ago the dual mass flywheel and clutch had been changed also, which is quite reassuring to know it is all new in there....

So, a couple of jobs ticked off today until the rain hit us...

The rubber cord on the fuel cap was broken

swapped that out for a brand new one, you can't just buy the cord though, you have to buy a whole new fuel cap, not bad at only £26 from Audi.

I then wanted to get the front seats out to hoover the carpets where know one looks, 11 years of other people being in a car I always shudder.....

so sill protected to prevent scratching it on lifting the seats out of the car, damn they are bloody heavy....

and then each seat was scrubbed and gone over with Dr Leather's fantastic wipes...

I'll get an after pic later as only got them back in the car then it started bloody raining...

so today was the engines turn, sadly no pics as the weather was closing in....
General clean up in and around the bay, gave the plastics a good wash.
Airbox out (what a twat of a job that is with the lower electrical plug and lower snorkel)
Coil packs all out and took all the spark plugs out, all in exactly the condition i'd hoped them to be...

What did surprise me was the amount of surface rust on the chassis legs, was definitely not expecting that on a modern Audi, so that will be being sorted in the summer months.

Software/firmware updating - investigating what it's all about. So I have this

which I assume is MMI 2G high from digging around on the net.
It seems my firmware is a bit outdated if 5570 is still the current version? could someone more knowledgeable confirm please?

is this post still the most up to date information? to be honest i'd rather go buy the genuine discs from Audi is anyone has the most up to date part numbers?

What else is possible with MMI 2G high?

just having a look around on the web and it seems that the firmware update required for my car is 8K0 998 961, this is the three disc update to put the 5570 firmware onto my car.
The amount of discs on Ebay is staggering, some genuine, some home ripped copies.... All quite high costs (between £20-£45 for the set), so I ring my local Audi Centre (Worcester), quote the part number and yup no problem will be here in a couple of days... grand total £10.20....

watch this space....

but the Hel brake lines arrived today but are now not the priority.....

and Monday I ordered i set of LED light fun for a variety of placements around the car from Trups, what an absolute star to deal with, great communication, and they arrived the next day.
Initial inspection of what i'd order looks very well made and thoughtfully packaged with very clear labelling of where each LED goes, 5 gold stars from me, i can't wait to fit them....

As i had 10 minutes to kill at lunch i thought i'd stick some of the LED's in.

as said before and by others, very impressed with the service from Trups. All parts very well made and clearly labelled.

So i managed to get the 4no map reading lights in and the centre dome done, perfect colour.

the camera does not do them justice, and the light is nicely diffused behind the lens.
Just need this bloody rain to stop and i'll fit the rest, sod work...!!!

So, to bring this element to a conclusion here as stated in my other thread, the fault was traced to the loom being broken at the plug, Saturday is repair day... fingers crossed the motor works still.


fixed and all sorted, love it when it's an easy (read cheap) fix...!!!

Also got some more of the LED's fitted, reverse ones aren't working properly, they come on then go out and through a code. Waiting on a response from Trup's :thumbsup:
Just the red door warning and puddle lights to do, if it ever stops raining.

Fingers crossed i can get the new brake lines on tomorrow....

With the weather being a washout in the morning so all chance of doing the brake lines was abandoned for another more dryer day. So i set about doing the firmware update, mine being the original version the car left the factory with.
Version 3250

Loving things which are fairly idiot proof i used this guide
MMI 2G software update to version 5570 - mr-fix.info
my satnav being MMI 2G High and i bought the 3 CD disc pack from my local Audi Dealer

The guide documents that all discs be removed from the front and rear CD players, what it fails to state is which player the update CD goes into... having nearly burned the planet down to the ground having used the Nav CD player in the boot and constantly getting CD not recognised, it suddenly dawned on me that maybe i should use the in dash CD...
(I did say i like things idiot proof... clearly i'm a special idiot!!!)
anyway having got the correct disc in the correct player...

it all started to download perfectly.
Disc 2 was done twice as i have inbuilt Bluetooth
and with the last disc downloaded we have


I have the battery charger plugged in to keep the battery levels high, it kept on coming up with low battery voltage, now as the battery is of an unknown age/condition I thought i'd swap it out for a known good one...


Still having the old A5 has it's uses as the battery is the same on the 3.0tdi and the S5, the battery on the A5 being recently new i swapped them over.... It made zero difference, so now another issue to investigate

Well the battery issue turned out to be that the replacement battery had to be recoded.... never known of that before, everyday is a school day.

I found this here which showed the way forward.
Just a note to others if you are inputting the whole code, including the batteries part number, make sure you have 2 spaces after that and before the 3 digit code, the long coding needs to see 26 characters in total, including spaces.

So todays update is nothing more exciting than ordering more parts from my local friendly neighbourhood Spide... (wrong Universe) Audi Dealer...!

each night i have been fitting the rest of the interior LED's, very pleased with them... i did discover the passenger puddle light housing in the base of the door was cracked, so a new one was ordered and fitted (with the bulb replaced for the LED
The rear "S5" badge had a small corner of the red flash missing, so a brand new badge ordered and fitted.

Whilst talking to the Parts guy i mentioned that my main MMI knob was peeling, he said there was a repair kit available, which i replied was for the joystick option on the later MMI. He confirmed that, which wouldn't work on mine, to which he then stated that the knob isn't available on it's own "you have to buy the complete panel, at £740".
Bit of digging through ETOS and found the version of knob i needed and duly ordered... £29 is a bit better than £740...!!!

Hopefully over the weekend i can get some time to fit the brake lines and have a good clean under the arches, with getting the liners out etc...

Today was spent removing all the aluminium window trim and grill so as to get it into the paintshop to get it turned black.... I just couldn't bring myself to wrap it in vinyl.

What an absolute TWAT of a job, the WSM states one line on interior removal, there went 2 hours of the day....

Poor thing is looking sorry for itself, tape has been applied to all the window edges to seal it all back up....

Just need to make my mind up on whether satin or gloss black!!!

So today.... frustrating and it's probably why I do so much myself, sadly my job means I have little time these days to get as deep into car mods as I once did. Paint being the one thing that absorbs my time so I entrust it to local specialists. Yesterday I removed all the chrome trim to take it to my trusted paint bod... too busy came the reply (wasn't impressed given the amount of work we put his way), so onto the next one...

nah mate can't be painted

and the next one said the same....

FFS, so the only course of action was to fuck work, finish early and start sanding the anodising off of the aluminium, ball ache of a laborious job (hence why wanting to pay others to do it) but persevered all afternoon and managed to get the first coat of Etch Primer onto all 6 trims.



that will need flatting back and another couple of coats of etch, then flatten again and then prime and paint.

I've decided on satin black (I say decided, I've got 6 tins on the shelf and I can't be arsed to buy more), then a satin lacquer.


The grill being plastic needs a slightly different process, first off is to chemically remove the chrome trim, if I remember right from my modelling days (Airfix kits, not walking down bloody catwalks) a good soak in Mr Muscle Oven cleaner will remove the chrome to leave bare plastic ready for plastic etch primer etc etc etc…

If the weather holds out I may get it done for the weekend....

I’m just amazed you managed to get the trim off without damaging it! I’ve read enough horror stories on the subject to be suitably terrified of the prospect of damaging one of the pieces in the process. Especially considering the truly princely prices Audi demands for replacement bits! The sand, prime, sand, prime ad nauseam I could live with because what’s the fun in working on one’s car if there’s no mind-numbingly tedious labour involved?
to be honest it all came off fairly easy, the pain in the arse was removing half the interior to take the main door seal off (needed to remove that so as to get a direct line of sight for drilling out the rivets) and door mirrors all had to come off.

The piece on the door just levered off. The roof trim, drill the rivets out (3.2mm drill bit), then once they were out the way I applied tape to the paintwork above and carefully pulled the rubber back till the spring clips holding the trim on and just very carefully levered the trim off near the clips, doing each one in term.
My tip would be to have an assistant hold the very end of the trim near the door mirror end to stop it flapping about
