I copied this from my policy with Hastings Direct...does that mean that they will not replace the roof if the rear window is damaged?....this is what I understood from it but I will be happy to be corrected


Glass damage
What is covered
- Broken glass in the windscreens or windows of your car and any scratching to your car’s bodywork as a result of the broken glass.

What is not covered
- The excess shown for this section on your Schedule.
- Sunroofs or any other glass forming part of your car.

Well it is covered as I read that. "Broken glass in the windscreens or windows of your car" are covered. The rear window is a 'erm window!

" Sunroofs or any other glass forming part of your car." I take this to mean rear view mirrors, wing mirrors etc and other glass in the car which is not a window.

Your best bet is to ring them and ask.

I had the demist elements pack up on my last A5 cab and i can tell you the whole roof had to be replaced.Luckly all covered by adui warranty.

But as I have said most policies only cover the windows if replaced by approved suppliers or otherwise limited to £? . I have phoned autoglass and they cant replace a rear window for an audi cab and they were the approved suppliers for my insurance company . Hopefully not something I will ever have to argue with them . I have only ever had one # rear window in over 35 years of car ownership and that was on my daughters car .
I also had a rear demister element fail on my car and I am sure that as well as Jason there was someone else that has the same problem , so I wonder how common it is ?

Glad you eventually had a positive outcome. I am SO GLAD that I've discovered another example of this problem!!
My A5 Cab is 15 months old & only 5600 miles on clock.Having lowered my soft top at 10 - 15 mph I returned home operated switch to close roof only to hear a gut-wrenching shatter sound behind me! I immediately called Audi assistance, leaving the roof in the exact position (half up). He simply manually pushed rear flap down to fully open roof & escorted me to Audi dealer. They just took it into storage & 4 days on have looked at it & sent a report off to Audi. I'm not yet privy to any of their findings.
Both me & AA guy felt the hood had jammed as it came up, yet there was nothing of any significance in boot to foul up.
I suspect I'm gonna have the same battle as you!! Have you come across any further examples I can quote or investigate? HELP!![/QUOTE
RESULT!!!!!
After 3 weeks of forensic tests on my soft top mechanism, Audi UK have finally had to accept that it was a weird though not unique problem with the electric mechanism that somehow twisted the screen panel causing the glass to shatter!!!
They coughed up £4800 (plus 3 week hire costs on a Q3). Cos of weather not yet tested hood extensively - just hope the workshop fit is as good/watertight/rattle-free as the factory original!!
Looking forward to a burnt scalp when sun finally appears!!!!:2thumbsup:

My roof was replaced by audi due to the wear problem. Audi paid for this but I was given a invoice with the cost of the works, total 2700 so how they get to 5000 I don't know

The £2700 bill would have been the audi warranty bill the dealership would have charged this to Audi UK and as Audi UK govern the cost for warranty work done by the dealers that explains the cost. £5000 is the price to the customer without discount. Point to note warranty work is always cheaper than you would pay your Audi dealership.

Liverpool Victoria covers the roof and any glass, so not a problem with them and also the cheapest by far. as in my previous post the cost of a new roof is £2541 so some one is pulling a fast one

Aren't LV part of Admiral?... I'm definitely going to check my insurance....the roof is definitely going down a lot whilst we have this hot spell...

Have seen these roofs going for £1k on Ebay - just a question of fitting it (properly lol)

Same thing happened to me, closing hood, nearly closed and then rear window just shattered. Car still under warranty and goes to Audi dealer tomorrow. I will update when I know the outcome, any further news on this issue would be helpful?

The rear glass has shattered in my A5 convertible roof for no apparent reason whilst closing and certainly not through my own actions after all it operates by pressing a button!! Cost of replacement £5,000 +vat!!! Insurers will not accept claim as they say mechanical problem. Audi may not accept liability because car is 3 months outside of warranty. Has anyone else had this problem? I had an Audi A4 convertible for 8 years before and no problems so I know how to use the roof!! This should not happen with Audi Technology and don't know where this is going with them atm. New convertible owners beware!!

I own a auto upholstery shop and just put a new top on a a5. When you put a new top on your putting the top up and down about 6 times, Every time i used it it worked perfect, When the customer picked car up she put the top down and on the way back up did the same thing as yours broke the window. How I cant figure it out ive been installing tops for over 44 years and this top has plastic slides that slide into the frame all the way around meaning one thing there is only one way the top can go on there is no wrong way to do it. The first thing my customer said is i put the top on correct which is not the case. So i still have the car trying to find out what happened and yes the price tag on this job is very high which i fell that im not resposable for it but also fell the customer isnt at fault either but either way someone is going to have to dish out another 3k for a new top. If i find the problem i will pass it on to you but if any reades have found the problem i would sure like to hear from you.

Just had this happen yesterday. Audi had replaced entire roof in November 2020. Car only has 13,500 miles on clock. I went to close roof and rear window just shattered. Obviously an Audi defect. Fortunately when I purchased at end of lease I bought an extended warranty. Audi dealership said roof is a few weeks out of original replacement 1 year guarantee. I’m disgusted. Obviously I did nothing wrong. Shouldn’t Audi take responsibility since other cars have had the same issue!

my name is Steve I own Convertible Tops and More and will tell you how they get $5000 the MSRP for this top made by Robbins Auto Top is $3056.00 but you can get the top at a much better price same cloth top GermanA5B Acoustic Sonnenland Cloth for $2179.00 as for as labor I think the book calls for 10hours my shop charges $95 a hour so you have $950 in labor $2179 on the top for a total of $3129 here is how you get the $5000 the Audi dealer charges you for 10 hours at there shop rate of Im thinking $150 a hour so $1500 labor and the top buying it from the dealer is $3500 total of $5000 the dealer top and the top I use are the same cloth topping how can I say that its real easy there is only 1 company in the world that makes convertible top material the company name is Haartz thats it no other company makes it so every manufacture is using the same cloth its just who has the best patterns for the top
