Hi Dom, I think that in the case of the S5, it's less about perceived obsolescence, although the replacement of a given model with an updated version will always hurt retained values of the previous car - and more a case of how many people will be prepared to finance the running costs of a big, thirsty V8 in the present and near-term climate.

Seems at present that year-old S5s, purchased for say £45K, have shed up to 30% of their value, and this deprecetiation is likely to accelerate as times toughen.

On the plus-side though is that even after another year or so, when the V6 finally replaces the V8 in the coupe, there will still only be a relatively small number of thus-equipped S5s around - and probably a healthy 'enthusiast' market for well-kept, low-mileage examples.
