My S5 has 2k miles on it and i noticed an aweful burning smell coming from the engine which was still there after 3 days - dropped it off at the dealership today and awaiting the phone call to let me know what is wrong with it.

Has anyone else had any issues with a burning smell?? - it doesnt smell like clutch, i've only ever had manual cars since i was 17, so i am quite familiar with that smell!! lol

In the meantime they have given me a Q7 to test out - as im looking at a new car for the mrs!

UGH, that is not good to hear. I'm at about 1,400 miles now, and so far, no foul smell; however, I'll keep my nose out. Be sure to let us know what it is, and whether it can prevented. Not a good start!

Sure you haven't caught a plasic bag or something on the undersides ??? Burning smells once they get that strong usually end in a call to the Fire Department !! Let us know what they found.

Blade, you ain't wrong there, but you can't be too careful. I saw an 07 plate Saab estate with the whole of the front end fully ablaze this morning (about 6 foot high flames) near the Cartgate roundabout on the A303:eek: . The poor guy was standing next to his car (a little way away though!) and you could just about see the thought bubble full of expletives above his head. Not good!

Update On The S5 Problem

Update on the 3 day wait to get the car back....

Firstly they didnt work on the car day 1, due to the fact that the 'S5 specialist' was off sick and they will not let anyone else touch it.

Called the following day to be told that they drove it (put 30 miles on it!!!) and they could not smell anything like i was describing. They hooked it up to the computers to check for fault codes and also found nothing...... They told me to bring it in again if it came back.

Low and behold on the ride home the smell was back!!!!

Now i thought it could be my driving... although i have not been driving hard and the smell is most definitely not clutch as i have burned through enough clutches in my younger days to be very familiar with that smell...

Any ideas anyone??????

kco2000,

If it were me, I'd suggest to them that you will take their "S5 specialist" out for a drive in your car (you driving) and then get him to accept there's a burning smell.

Also, I'd be saying that 30 miles is a bit excessive to test your car, but half a tank of gas would go a long way to recompense you... That "S5 specialist" could front up with the cash if you drop by a filling station whilst out testing your car...!

I never have any smell on a daily commute going 75-85 mph on the freeway for 20 miles... however, I get a slight burning smell inside when I WOT for 2-3 miles on the hill right before I get home. I'll get the same smell doing a mountain run pushing the S5 hard, could be 10-20 mile hard twisties in low gears... but never has the temperature engine gauge risen one bit. (will probably do a track day next month, we'll see the results...)

as soon as it made the smell on the way home I would have turn the car around so it could make the smell for them. You need to bring it in when the car is making this smell so they can diagnois it then
