Get your car to a dealer or a specialist ASAP. When the gearbox goes on these it can as pricey as a new engine.
What year S5 do you have and has the gearbox service been carried out ?

What's the mileage and does it have any service history 🤔 .
Does the car have any warranty? If so get it looked at QuickTime and get it scanned ASAP.

You only have 30 days from the date you bought it to notify the seller that you want to reject the car and get a full refund. After that the seller's gets options to repair, replace or refund - whichever is most cost effective.

If you don't want to reject it then check that warranty - if it is dependent on service then you must check the service history for the gearbox itself - at 84K it needs to have been serviced twice.

the dealer as arranged to pick it up today and taking it to midlands automatics in kettering to get the box sorted
I think you might be in a position to say to the dealer, before they take the car back, that if they fail to repair the car satisfactorily you will be exercising your 30 day right to reject for a full refund. I also think the 30 day clock stops for the time it's away and restarts when you get it back from repair.

It would be worth you taking the time to check exactly what your consumer rights are so you aren't put at a disadvantage by the dealer. See if you have legal cover in any of your insurance policies or contact the Citizens Advice consumer helpline.
