Hi all am new to this forum and have been to see a 58 plate A5 3.0TDi with the S- Tronic box mileage is 63K. On the test drive, in heavy traffic I observed a slight knock/click when going from 1st to 2nd whilst using a very light amount of throttle. Normal driving the box went up and down the gears faultlessly both in auto and using the paddles. There no fault codes stored for the gearbox

I have read the stories of how expensive these can be when they go wrong.

Should I be really worried about this ? Any comments, please

Hi Jester, and welcome!

First point, you have a 6sp Tiptronic full auto box. The S-tronics were only fitted late 2010 onwards, I think. Tips were 6 speed, S-tronic are 7 speed.

I'm sure my 2009 3.0tdi did the same thing, but not always noticeable.

The tip tronic is 'sealed for life' according to Audi, but ZF who make the box say it should be serviced around 70k miles. Here's the problem, not many place will actually service it as it doesn't have a schedule. I know of some who have had them serviced by transmission specialists. Where abouts are you?

I serviced mine myself. Didn't notice any difference really, but then again it was running fine anyway. I did get the odd clunk at slow speeds and sometimes a wobble as it changed gear, but very rarely!

The tiptronic box is considered to be a solid box with few if any issues! It is fitted to Range Rover, Jaguar, BMW etc in varying models of the 'same' box.

Hi Dave many thanks for the reply and for correcting me about which transmission this car has.
I am based in South Wales just outside of Cardiff.

I have contacted my local German Car specialist re servicing of the Tiptronic box and am waiting to hear what they come back with.
Yes the sound I heard only happened twice on the test drive with much changing of the lower gears in traffic and it wasn't loud but I was listening intently for any sound at all..

It is good to hear that the Tiptronic box has less reliability issues than the S Tronic.

Would like to hear if anyone has had any bad issues with the Tiptronic or anyone else noted a similar sound at low revs changing 1st to 2nd ?

You're welcome!

Ah, that's good, because I was going to suggest Bristol Transmissions, not that far from you, Bristol Transmissions | Manual & Automatic Transmission Repairs as they have done servicing on the Tip-Tronic and know all about the fluids needed! They did the service on a member of this forum! They also supplied me with the special oil that is required if you go all the way and change the differential oils. It is called Sturaco FM1992 and goes in the centre/transfer case. I sodl this worldwide as it's very difficult to get hold of.

To service the box, you need Lifeguard 8 (green oil), sump gasket and filter. Not sure what they charged the forum member, but it's a good £200 in parts alone.

Have a search on here for the tiptronic and Sturaco additive.

My S5 was originally from Cardiff Audi, so it too is a Welsh boyo! :D

Ps, My tiptronic used to do a rattle/knock like something loose in the box when warm and when going into reverse to back onto the drive.

It did have the odd knock/rattle, but in general it was nice and smooth. It also had to cope with the 310bhp and 480ft/lbs going through it! :)

Thanks for that Dave will give them a call. My Local specialist have quoted £473.67 all in and service intervals of 40k.

Time for some research into the costs of the fluids,, filter etc me thinks!

The Welsh connection is very slim. The car is in Bristol and I hail from New Malden originally.
Although I can say I have been over here from the age of 6 :).
