Hi all, so I am new to the forum but not exactly new to the A5 scene.

I had a 2.0tdi S-Line A5 for approx. 1 year until a few weeks ago it was time to bite the bullet and get an S5. After spending an age looking at all sorts which for one reason or another were not quite right I eventually found this one.

Found it on Autotrader 2 minutes after the listing went live, flew from Southampton to Aberdeen on the Friday and drove it all the way home 10.5 hours (and what a 10.5 hours of fun it was!).

Spec: 2007 4.2 V8 S5, 51k, Piano Black, Black Leather, Carbon Trim, MMI, Keyless Entry, Lighting Pack, Comfort Pack etc etc - and owned by an absolute perfectionist.

Plans for the car are as follows:
- KW2 Coilovers
- Millteck Cat Back system with GT-80 tips (non resonated)
- 20mm wheels spacers all around
- A few VagCom Tweaks
- German Pressed Plates with personal plate RS55 VAG (waiting for previous owner to transfer old plate off).

I have lots planned for the car however I wanted to get some photos before I start "tinkering" with it so here they are:

Here are just a few random photos up until this point:

Taken on the drive back down from Aberdeen - she isn't as thirsty as I was expecting - my average back was 25.5mpg with some "spirited" driving.

Coilovers were a bit of a pain to fit - took approx. 10 hours all together as many of the bolts were seized and I was reluctant the touch the pinch bolts on his after many bad experiences with them being seized or snapping off. So yes, the front shocks can be installed without undoing these pinch bolts but its very hard and very painful at times.

Backs were sitting very very low so had to taken them completely apart again to adjust the height - can't be done in situ as the adjustment collar isn't accessible due to the rear suspension seat's lip - grrr!!!

Checking for spacer sizes - going to go with 20mm as most people on here have had good luck with them.

Mid way through coil over fitting - what a mess.

This then dragged out well into the night until enough was enough - I had to sleep and attack it the next day.

Victory after removing one of the front shocks - literally had to battle to get this out on both sides for my reluctant to touch the pinch bolts.

Also gave it a full service inc air filter, spark plugs, oil, oil filter etc.

How is is sitting this evening - I think the rear is the perfect height, the front i'm going to allow to settle then lower down later this week to even it out. I like to go low but not silly low.

Welcome to A5oc

You must have regained 20hp after changing that air filter - looked bad.

Agree that the back sits well and when the shocks settle it will look very good overall. Nice car.
Sweet. That's a lot of work. Can't believe how shitty that air filter was!
Yeah the filter was disgusting and soo glad I serviced it ASAP.

Out of curiosity, how often do people service their S5s? To me long life servicing doesn't make sense on these type of cars!

So after letting the suspension settle for a while I started to play around with the stance and the ride height last night.

On with the 20mm H+R spacers, they really are excellent quality:

Then down on the front:

And how it now sits:

Unfortunately the 20mm spacers on the fronts were too wide with the offset and how low I wanted to run it so will need to get some 15mm spacers.

The 20mm spacers on the rear are just right but I plan to bring the rear down another 10mm or so.

Then once I have all the spacers sorted and ride height established I will need to take it to get fully aligned again.

This is what it was like parked half on a kerb (the high side) - never going to be able to drive with it like this so the spacers had to come off and the suspension had to come up approx. 10mm.

Really nice progress mate, I know how you feel when work on a car goes into the night and the frustration increases!
Ride height looks sweet as now, just need some nice alloys to finish it off.
Most likely going to upgrade to an RS5 front end at this point but if anyone can share any links or recommend any places for parts etc. Wont be going to Audi for all new parts unless I have no other choice.
Bugger, that sucks. That's not a cheap list, hopefully a few people on here are flogging what you need
Car looks awesome Phil! Such a shame about the dear jumping out though. How much were your coilovers and did you fit them all yourself?
Sorry that deer decided to share the roadway with you. But, always good to have an excuse to do more upgrades...RS5 auxillary radiators, etc.

Thank Lloyd. I was looking at your car in the gate 1 car park when I had to ride my bike into work on Friday. Looks good.

Yes fitted coilovers myself but was a bit of a pig as I didn't want to remove the pinch bolts. Managed to find them out of pure chance on edition 38 forum for £280 delivered with only a few thousand miles on them. They would have been 1.5k new!

Cheers, yeah I'm currently sourcing parts.

Considering a faceless front end conversion but I think it's too much unnecessary work. I need to get the car back on the road ASAP and a facelift conversion isn't the way to do that... Plus all the additional components I would need.

However, as it's out of action for a short while I'm going to get the manifold off and give it a coat of paint. Probably gloss black as it's always looked a bit grotty to me. Perfect opportunityto ccheck out the carbon build up as well.
I never knew you worked in there Phil? Okay i'll have to meet up with you soon once your back on the road to check out the lowering. I want to do mine now. What was the ride like? Alot firmer?

Yep sure do, ask Scott about me!

Ride is considerably firmer however thats to be expected when you lower the car by 70-80mm from the already lowered 30mm S5 springs.

The KW2s have adjustable rebound dampening however I just set them to 50% (9 / 18 clicks) and they feel fine.
All components now ordered and on their way - fingers crossed for the rebuild process to start on Saturday morning.

Parts not cheap but not willing to compromise on anything, even if its a tiny bit cracked it may as well be replaced. The aim here is to never have to take the front end off again to replace any failed components so I'm taking this opportunity to do the aux belt, pulleys, tensioner, and all plastic clips that have broken etc.

Looking forward to having it back on the road.
Any update on fixing it Phil? Is it back on the road yet?

Yep, the last of the components were collected today from Audi (I have a dam good firend who has been running around collecting parts for me whilst Im at work).

Fingers crossed I should start putting it back together on Saturday.
