Inside my armrest there seems to be no space to store anything....I don't have any pictures but it is very shallow with a spot for an adapter of some sorts and ware the 12v plug is its a little deeper...I have seen pictures of other peoples A5s that have more room inside the armrest. I'm wondering if there is a way to take out the shallow part and make the compartment all one size?

Got any examples of those pictures you've seen? Would be helpful.

That pic looks like my armrest internals, (with the little raised bit at the back which acts as a platform form my illicitly-stashed ciggies....)

Wonder why there would be a lower-profile version? Unless it has a hidden compartment? Azadian, take a knife and cut into the bottom of yours and tell us what you find?

In my car, there is a connection plate for a phone cradle - which only Audi sell for £100 and then only for very old phones it seems.

I have the phone prep low system (basic Bluetooth). I would assume that if you don't have phone prep of some sort, you wouldn't have a connection plate taking up all that space under the armrest. I don't have a picture but could take one tomorrow if there isn't one already available somewhere.

This is interesting. You have a US spec car and so do I. However, the storage area under my armrest looks identical to the pic you posted above (i.e., I do not have the phone connection plate you mentioned).

Then again, maybe since my S5 is an '09 and your A5 is an '08 could explain why there's a difference between ours. I can't seem to recall whether my previous '08 A5 had that connection plate.

Wish I could provide advice on how to remove it, but since I don't have that same piece, I can't really help ya.

The repair manual calls it a Center Console Storage Compartment.

It looks like this part is replaceable. You will need to remove the center console in order to get to the screws, though.

Unfortunately, there are no part numbers. Perhaps someone with a parts catalog could help with that. I know that I would love to get rid of the cell phone prep stuff and just have more storage!

EuroDan has beat me to the centre console pic but I have attached the phone-prep pics for those with Phone Prep Low (9ZF), Phone Prep High (9ZW) - both with MMI, and for those without MMI (who can only have 9ZF). If you have no phone prep your code is 9W0. Incidentally, the pictures for 9ZF with MMI and for 9ZF without MMI look the same but the parts list is longer.

My initial thoughts are that it would be too much effort to remove the centre console, disconnect and remove the phone mounting plate and then put it all back together again. Not only that, by disconnecting any of the cables underneath the mounting plate, you may disable the hands free phone system.

A lot of work/risk for just a little extra (but much needed) storage space. From EuroDan's post you would also need parts 35 & 36 and possibly others depending on what came out and what needs to go back in.

Good luck to anyone brave (or daft) enough to give this a go. If somebody does, take lots of photographs as you go and document it all. ;)

My S5 is an '08, and it is different than the pic. Mine has the phone caddie thingie and barely enough room for a pack of tic-tacs.

I just picked up the part today from the Austin, TX Audi dealer and am working on getting my center console apart. If anytone has a good set of photos or list of what to take off first, I'll get through this pretty quickly and post some photos. I have that phone prep and it's a really stupid option and wasted what little space we do have in the car. I wont even talk about how much I hate the cup holder array... If you know of a replacement / other region option I'll do that one too.

Anyway, I'm mid-install and sort of stuck since don't know how to get the fore section of the center console to release from the damn car :). Will it be worth the 3 hours of labor? Yes... The 10 hours it took to install my Passport Escort Qi45 was also worth not going to the skeevy car audio places in town...
