I have a two week old A5 S-line and have notice this alarming rattle. It's almost as if the exhaust is loose or something. You hear it right at start up and then when you pull away in 1st. Has anyone had this problem? I searched the threads and have not come up with any matches.

I wouldn't trade this car for anything but I have noticed the vibration that other posts have mentioned. It has to be the tires or balancing and it is very slight. Also, I have the skweeking left front speaker panel that I have heard on the forums... the car can't handle cranking up the volume.

Great car. I even got flagged down on the 405 by a new M3. That has to be worth something.

There is a faint rattling noise on mine (3.0TDi, not an S-Line). I've been trying to pin down the conditions under which it occurs, though I've yet to be able to reproduce it at will. I've also been struggling to describe it. It sounds a bit like I imagine shaking and rolling a golf ball round in a heavy glass jar might do (I must try it ;) )

I also have another minor irritant in that it sounds like there's a very small canary in the centre air vent.

I'll get round to taking the car into a dealer at some stage, probably once I've pinned down the rattle so that there's less risk of repeat trips to the dealer.

I also have the slight rattle. Good analogy of the golf ball by the way. Although I can't produce it at will, it seems more prevalent when accelerating around corners from very low speed. My local dealer has sent a report to Audi for advice (so that'll probably be the last of it!).

That's exactly what it sounds like. I'll have to go to the dealer even though it is an hour away. It was kind of embarassing yesterday when I could hear the Valet starting my car just around the corner... that faint golf ball rattling in the distance.

answer to rattle

I can provide a definitive answer to this problem, a baffle in the muffler has broken loose internally, my dealer has ordered a new muffler from Germany to solve this same problem in my A5.

My dealer said ordered on 5/14/08 and would be red tagged and in by 5/18/08 but it is now 5/22 and have not received call yet. so I would say 1-2 weeks - best guess.

Not to beat a dead horse NJ but was there also a burning smell after driving? I just raced it around the block and there was a burning smell and the muff's or cat's sounded like a popcorn popper.... click, click click.

My 3.0TDi Sport had a rattle coming from the rear. Sounded like was coming from the rear seat/boot catch/boot floor/exahaust mounts. I took it in to my Auid dealer and the spent a couple of days tightening things up and it appears to have worked... unfortunately I'm unable to tell you where the rattle was coming from though.

How many miles on your A5? only two weeks old probably just normal smell as everything is new and does tend to do that early on. My sound started early as well but I at first thought it was just the variable cam shaft, but as it got worse I realized it was the exhaust.

I thought it was the cam too at first. Just getting used to newness of the car I guess. I'm sure the smell is normal. I was getting on it a little but were talking only 5 miles of driving. When I pulled into my garage to listen to the idle I heard that extra clicking/rattling noise that was not there before. There are the normal noises from the cat after you shut it off but I have never heard that kind of sound over the idle before.

Oh, 1500 miles on it.

OK, I finally got round to taking the car in to have its golf ball (see above) removed. They could find nothing. However I got a software update and a new non-return valve in the EGR (I think that's exhaust gas recirculation unit?). On the drive way back from the dealership, no rattle. So, maybe the non-return valve was the cause (seems unlikely) or maybe the rattle will return. Time will tell.

Any others had similar experience?

My S5 does it it sounds like a heat shield is loose. I took it in to the dealer
they heard it too. Brought in a Audi rep. to look at it they said it was normal.
It's something to do with the AC. If I turn on the AC it goes away go figure.
