Question regarding the 2018 S5

tomm:
1. You’re far too young to have the readies to buy a 2018 S5.
2. That you obviously do is clearly the product of a misspent youth.
3. Opinion is divided over whether we should be more jealous of you having the cash for an S5, or the misspent youth. The debate is likely to go on for some time...
Seriously, tomm, if Canadian insurance companies are anything like Australian ones, you’re more than likely to face a couple of challenges. The first will be finding an insurance company that will actually agree to insure a high performance car being driven by a 19yo. Assuming you do find one, I’m willing to bet that the premiums will be well up in the “f**k-ton” range. That is to say, astronomical!
Good luck!

What would you recommend for a 19 yrs old student?

My friend got a gle63 coupe and his insurance is 9k per year. So I was thinking S5 would be slightly cheaper since it is V6. I didnt think that people would consider me as a misspent youth. It is not RS5, come on
Welcome to the great Oz cultural tradition of “taking the piss”, tomm. I really was just winding you up, and don’t actually think your circumstances are the result of a misspent youth.
$9k per year is genuinely right up at the top of the range. Doc is on the money about an average spend on insurance, but that’s for someone with a few more years under the belt (I know, Doc, not that many!). By way of comparison, when my son went to get insurance (at 19), he was staring at a little over $3k, and that was just for a going-along 6 year old family sedan.
I did some quick-n-dirty research on insurance costs in Canada. Prices vary wildly but, for a 4 year old A3 2.0l quattro with a 19yo driver, you’re looking at anywhere between $3.5k and $7k. Add anywhere up to 50% for an S5 of similar vintage. I chickened out on pricing a 2017 S5. So, insurance on a current S5 might be cheaper, but not by much.
If you want something that gives a great mix of fun, practicality, economy (for several values of “economy”), and performance, think about an A3 or, if you can live with the insurance premiums, an S3. Quattro is a must-have.
