I got my pulley from allstars motorsport in Portugal 3 years ago for £350 delivered. I know more recently they had offers of a very similar price. But you can spend more for top end stuff like the Fluidampr which has a viscous damper in it, Dippy has one of these.

I wouldn't advise the bolt over pulleys, like APR as you don't eradicate the potential pulley issue which is the OE pulley is left on and the drive for the SC is bolted over the top. The Aux belt will still run on the OE pulley..

I replaced mine with a CTS 187mm pulley way before my crank pulley was worn. I changed my pulley at 40k miles and it still looked like new, so I sold it to someone with a split pulley.

As you will see, I'm the king of DIYs on here and do most of the maintenance and upgrades myself, so can't comment on labour costs.

MRC are well recommended and will quote you inclusive of fitting the pulley for stage 2!

You don't normally change the supercharger pulley due to the crank sizes available now. It used to be the big pub chat to say, 'I'm dual pulley', but with loads of options and sizes for the crank, the SC pulley isn't touched or needed.

So going with MRC will mean I kill 2 birds with one stone and won't have to worry about the pulley dying any time soon?

Yes, well, so long as you go stage 2 with a replacement crank pulley that is either the damped Fluidampr or a single piece billet alloy pulley, which most are in the aftermarket/tuning.

So in layman's terms, I'll still need a new pulley (is this the one you got?) if going stage 2 and wanting to nip this potential issue in the bud for good?

At 100k miles, the pulley may have already be replaced? Is your car totally stock? Have you checked?

Cool. I've emailed MRC to see if they'll replace it with the one you have when it goes in for stage 2.

My car has APR stage 1+ (ECU/TCU tune and high flow intake). Stock apart from that.

MRC may not fit the CTS pulley, depends on what connections they have. I know they tend to fit the 189mm pulley for stage 2. But see what they say.

FYI I purchased my vdamper direct (and paid the import customs duty) and took it to MRC. Doug was happy to fit it instead of the single piece one they normally use. Fortunately he also fitted the correct size drive belt because the one it came with was too small. But if you go this route double check on the size. Someone at MRC told me that their standard size is 189mm which is why mine is, however various forum threads suggest that this is not true, and something Doug said to me while I was there suggests it too.

AIUI MRC fit a 179mm pulley with a 1310mm belt for their Stage 2. Like @Dippy I'm using a 189mm Fluidampr pulley with a 1325mm belt, however I bought mine from AKS Tuning in UK rather than import from Canada direct myself.

MRC were happy to fit and Stage 2 tune with the pulley/belt I supplied but I got no extra gains over their Stage 2 tunes with 179mm pulleys.

179mm pulleys are available from Fluidampr.

I have a 187mm CTS pulley with, as you know, the 1310mm belt.

I wouldn't assume there's any gains to be had from new pulley and that it's just a preventative maintenance thing, and with that in mind I'd rather do it as cheap as possible (without compromising on quality too much).

I wonder about that. Based on what Doug told me I know that my map was tweaked because my pulley was bigger. Yes that tweak could have been to compensate for the up to 5% extra airflow by changing the bypass valve map. However they are more used to matching the fuelling and timing maps to the higher airflow from larger pulleys and so it would have been easier to do that.

How is the situation on the oil leak?

I am planning to buy a 2012 S5, but kinda afraid I just burn my money, going through the forums, 71K miles on it, so might be good for a while, and I don't mind spending on maintenance, but problems with the gearbox sounds like a nightmare.

Buying a 10 year high performance car privately will always be a risk specially with auto. You should allocate few £k for urgent repairs. I recall when I owned BMW, people would cry on the forum after pickup a performance BMW 330i for a bargain and faced with several £k urgent repair bill. Most sellers get rid of the car at the sign of expensive fault.

If you bought a A4 with 1.8i engine it maybe a lot safer option

I haven't had a recurring box leak. But where is it coming from? Wasn't it the filter housing? How was it fixed? Got any pics?

Took it to an automatic specialist today. They said it's not that bad a leak (any more) and looks like it's coming from the oil pan gasket as there's no sign of leaks any higher up the gearbox. £150 to replace gasket inc. labour. I've asked them to do that plus a full DSG service as they'll be draining the oil anyway (so about £300 all in).

Will report back once done and put a few miles on it.

I did read somewhere that the oil pan can warp over time, causing leaks?

Great! Atleast that should be it fixed!

Haven't heard of oil pans warping! unless it's been removed before and put back on in a dodgy way, eg tightening the bolts all wrong. There will be a sequence and torque values on the pan bolts.

Could we believe that a mechanic who overtightens the filter could also make a mess of torque sequencing the pan bolts?
