My A5 Sportback has electromechanical power steering - I have had two on-screen warnings about 'Power Steering Failure', one red and the other amber. These have only occurred when sitting in stationary traffic for long periods in warm dry ambient conditions. The steering is workable but feels very heavy.

Each time I've parked up, switched the ignition off and restarted - the fault has cleared and the system is back to normal.

Any ideas as to what is causing this and how to diagnose or fix it ?

All advice will be appreciated - I'm reluctant to take it to the Audi dealership as historically they have been expensive and useless.

This fault is not always present. I have just been on a 500 mile trip and the on screen fault came up again after driving in hot weather conditions after about the first 100 miles. The steering was heavy but the car could still been driven.
After parking overnight we completed the journey without any further problem.

Any advice??

Did you get to the bottom of this problem?
Has anyone had the same or know why this happens?
I also experience this issue when towing my caravan for approx 1 hour... I can continue to drive but the steering goes stiff. After stopping and turning car off for 15 minutes it goes back to normal for a while then comes back on
I'm considering getting rid for vw toureg because it's frustrating

I love the audi and if I can sort the problem I would be very happy...

PS
No fault code coming up when connected to ecu

I have a 2019 S5 Sportback and have the same issue, got in the car and it just happened, with no warning signs. I can not clear the codes and my mechanic thinks it needs a new steering rack. Apparently, Audi put out a TSB about reprogramming the module to fix this program but I think it is too late for my car.
