My A5 came with the iPod adaptor and works great. I want to use a divise other than an iPod and want to know how seamless that works into the system. What displays on the screen for access etc.?

I use a 4GB USB flash drive (a/k/a, USB stick) with a USB adapter cable connected to the AMI (Audi Music Interface). It works very seamlessly. (See this thread for details and pics.)

Also, several folks are successfully using a Western Digital Passport portable hard drive.

Following are the types of AMI adapter cables available:
  • iPod
  • USB
  • Mini-USB
  • MP3 (mini-plug)

There is also an AMI Bluetooth adapter (for Bluetooth A2DP audio support - second from left in the picture below, it comes with the USB cable and a software update USB stick). All the cables in this picture:

Bluetooth adapter manual (in German):

Translations at babelfish.yahoo.com.

A thread about the Bluetooth adapter here at A5OC.com:

For a official list of devices compatible with AMI, see:

http://www.audi.de/etc/medialib/cms4imp/audi2/reports.Par.0127.File.pdf

and

http://www.audi.de/etc/medialib/cms4imp/audi2/reports.Par.0193.File.pdf

Good generic URL to keep an eye one:

http://www.audi.de/mp3

There is for example a software update for AMI available (model-year 2009 software) and they have been updating that www.audi.de/mp3 page regularly, which is good.

Thanks for the those links, loc. I purchased a Western Digital Passport HD a few months ago, partially in preparation for the S5 I have due sometime in early October. However, mine's a 320 gig, and the official list only shows 40 and 120 gig hd's. Mine is the type that obtains the entire power supply through the USB port, so hopefully the larger drives don't have a larger power draw than the S5 can support.

AMI manual lists 800 mA as the maximum power requirement for a USB device, see e.g. page 37 of the German manual:

http://www.audi.de/etc/medialib/cms4imp/audi2/reports.Par.0126.File.pdf

Just check your HDs specs to see how much juice it draws...

Thanks. Took a while to find an answer hidden within the WD site, but it looks like the drive is rated for a maximum draw of 1000 mA. It really shouldn't run at max draw most of the time though. Guess there's nothing to do but wait until the car gets here in October and try it out. If need be, I can always get another drive.
