I got a dipstick from Audi, not sure of the part number, could be the same one, but on mine, to read the same as the MMI, I have to pull it out and insert just to the o-ring. (Basically when the o-ring gives a bit of resistance in the dip tube) probably about 5 or 10mm out. But I can get a reading without warming the engine and leaving it for a few mins like when changing the oil etc.
