The part number above will sort it for you - don't bother telling them to what vehicle it's for, as computer will say no....

Don't rely on mmi - it's a lottery with that if you're trying to top up before it tells you

The Crawley TPS will order it in for you, no probs, if you don't have one nearer home

Defo cross reference mmi and dipstick and only use the dipstick to get the level spot on

Ours is one notch off the bottom of mmi but is still only just under the half way mark on the dipstick. I'm aiming to check at how many miles from the last service it gets before asking for oil on the dash

The MMI level is only for 1 ltr off oil. If you let it go empty it will flash up to add a litre. Then when you add the litre that will take that to full again so its not the end of the world there but Nick, you are certainly using a hell of a lot of oil. I drive sprinted often and from my last top up its down 1 notch on the MMI so I would defo get it checked out. I do have a dipstick too and just ordered it with the part number as had the same "computer says no" lol.

I think the early V6's use more oil than the later ones, I did read something about a change to the oil breather or something like that on another forum which seemed to explain it

I have had to put a litre in mine since it was serviced when I bought it 3k ago

I didnt think this was right so I rang audi who advised me that it needs to use more than 0.5l every 600 miles for them to consider there to be a problem, worryingly!!

I have now also started a spreadsheet measuring how much I put in and at what mileage to get an idea of the average between now and next service when I will mention it

I have no oil leaks or blue smoke to report, does seem to be a character of the engine but where the line is between acceptable and an issue I think we need to try and establish

I'm not sure I stated what the actual oil was that the dealer used, so since it seems to have reduced our oil usage considerably (or whatever unreported change they might've done at the same time, after a report of higher than expected oil consumption!)

Shell 0w30 Ultra Professional - there's a letter code as well, but the car isn't with me so will add that later as the top up bottle is in the boot!

Looking at the drawings for 2008 CAKA/CGWC and 2016 CGWC/CMUA/CGXC/CTUB I can't see any differences for crankcase/oil sump/oil pump/ventilation. However there are major changes for the 2016 CREC/CRED/CTDA.

It was a late night glenmorangie powered web browsing session when I came across it, after my oil light coming on that day less than 3k since a service

Took me a while to find it again it relates to the early s4's with the V6, is no way official and in hindsight maybe I read to much into it and it was just what I wanted to hear at the time! However I have come this far so might as well post it

Some Bloke On Pistonheads said:
i have a first generation S4 and it has a bit of a thirst as well, a litre per 1000miles is frightening, mostly down to the breather setup i believe. The crankcase breather spits it out under a bit of boot, varies on the engine but it goes back in at the throttle body on some cars. There was a thread on s2forum (numerous of experiments with a catch tank). brand new tank, idle car, check tank nothing, take car for a 2-3 mile drive and boot it 2-3 times and 50ml in the bottom of the tank, so that should answer why it does it i would hope. Assuming Audi still have the same breather setup.

The good news to a degree is that its fairly likely the engine isnt burning it, that freaked me out for the first few months of ownership!

Had an oil consumption test done on mine because i was going through a lot of oil. Oil light comes on about every 1000miles and i put 1 litre in. From memory i think if its more than 0.6litres in 500 miles then the add a oil catcher and a software update. It hasn't got any worse the 2 years ive owned it, they said it would be cheaper to just keep putting oil in. So i still am. I import german labeled 5litre bottles off of amazon, much cheaper: Castrol EDGE Engine Oil 5W-30 5L (German label) by Castrol http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B008EX7MH4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_udp_awd_Dw5Iwb2ECQDPC

Thanks for all the feedback! my garage basically told me to browse the owner club forums to see whether it was a common issue, whilst it doesn't seem too common at least im not the only one!

Again, i will order a dipstick from TPS and gauge it from there..... my MMI is reporting about 1 or 2 notches of oil left but oil light has not come on what so ever and the level hasn't changed since before christmas now! - seems to go down quickly then just sit at a certain level!

No smoke from exhaust as far as i can see.

I had a similar problem with my 2.0 TSI Scirocco with it consuming loads of oil, i know these are 2 very different cars but replacing the oil breather valve seemed to solve the sciroccos issues...... i have just re read the post above and just to confirm, am i right in saying that there is no upgrade or more up to date revision of the oil breather system? Mines a 2010 pre facelift s5.

The warning light comes after hitting the bottom, i gauged the consumption by zero'n the clock when the oil light came on and adding 1litre. Then when the light comes back on you can see how many miles you get for a litre, roughly i might add. Last time i checked it was 787miles per litre.

Ordered it from my local garage that order from TPS, they said the part number was a dipstick from an A6? i assumed that was ok as price matched to what you said too Adrian so went ahead and ordered it and it should be here today. :)

I'm trying to figure how much oil you've ACTUALLY put in, despite any readings. Am I right thinking they did an oil service (in which case it was drained and filled) and in six months you've actually only topped up with 1ltre??

Think a dip-stick is your best answer. More likely faulty oil level sensor. Not certain but think a couple of others had such issues a long time back so have a good search.

Honesly have to say I've never owned a car, such as this, that has done so much spirited mileage that uses so little oil. In my eyes the 3.0lt is pretty damn bullet proof in that respect. It's usually let down by all the ancillary stuff like sensors, actuators or regulatory emmissions gear.

Hi mate, i have dipstick fitted now, reading was at max when i put it in.

I will research in to oil level sensors, do you know if they are expensive? i have VAG COM and i dont have any errors on scans (not sure if these would show up though). Not sure if there are any other things i can check via vag com

Still needs to go in for its 70K service which will involve and complete oil change.

Here's some measurement data I took with VCDS when the engine was warm and full of oil (less than 1000 miles from new).

Address 01: Engine (8K2 907 551 A)

410 Oil fill level 100 mm
411 Oil level; condition for static measurement fulfilled Condition met
412 Oil level; dynamic average value 12 mm
413 Oil level; last valid dynamic value 12 mm
414 Oil level; maximum value 15 mm
415 Oil level; minimum value 0 mm
416 Oil level; static measurement 15 mm

FYI I also have just got a dipstick. My car has done 3,500 miles from new and when I first check the MMI, oil warm, it shows it 2 segments down from maximum. However when I let the car stand for 15-20 mins and then check again it has gone back to maximum. I just did this check and indeed the MMI had gone back to maximum. With my dipstick the oil is showing over the MAX line, in fact it obscures the 'M'.

Not relevant to this discussion but I'm quite pleased that it hasn't used any significant oil and the quality seems good. I'm planning to send some off to a lab for analysis when the car is a year old. Probably a bit frivolous but it doesn't cost much and I'll be interested to see the results.

I don't have MMI oil level indicator so can't vouch for its reliability or usefulness... but to me it just sounds like a rough indicator/reminder rather than an exact readout... but like I say I've never used it. You can't beat a dipstick for visual inspection of oil quality and level... providing it's done correctly.

Moomin are you in a 3.0 TDi? As its the petrol 3.0 we are having the trouble with as happy as I am your isnt using a drop of oil :)

I have been monitoring mine and it is using close to 0.4 litres every 600 miles which is enough for me to go back to audi without waiting till my next service, its under warranty and I have not had it long

I should mention the car is only on 29k miles and runs perfectly.. low idle, no strange noises, perfect smooth power delivery all the way to the red line and not a hint of blue smoke from the back

Car is going in a week on Monday so I will keep you updated
