All I can tell you is that I have never used that cable and I connect via bluetooth. Don't expect anything great though - all it allows is hands-free phone calls and I believe that the phone can be used as a music source, but I have never done that myself.

For a 2011 car it won't have apple car play as standard but can be retro fitted. I have a 2010 with MMI 3G which I'm sure will be similar to yours.

Regarding connecting your car via the AMI port in the glove box you can then play music from your phone through the speakers. To do this you need to connect the cable as expected and press the media button --> select source (i think its bottom right) of the main control button and scroll down to select AMI.

You can press the setup button while in this option to increase the source volume if needed.
In my experience the MMI works quite well with an iPod connected to the AMI as music storage space / jukebox. If you want Bluetooth streaming I've tried different AUX cables and AMI dongles and none of them work well. Lot's of glitches, lost connections and over all terrible audio quality. In the end I was so fed up that I forked the 200 euro's for the Kufatec solution that plugs into the MOST network. It integrates nicely with the MMI and offers BT streaming and an additional AUX connection, without the need to plug into the AMI port so my iPod still works.
