New owner: ESP Light/All Wheel Drive Question

936 Views 3 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  SimonRoma
I just got my 2009 A5 3.2 Quattro this past week. There are some dash warning lights on due to a bad Dynamic Steering Control Module (which has been ordered by my dealer and will be replaced in the first week of January after the holidays). ODB2 scans seem to indicate that this module is the problem.

For those who live in a snowy climate - One of the warning lights I have on is the ESP. Can someone tell me if this light is on, does the Quattro/All Wheel Drive system function? Or is the car in rear wheel drive only? My ABS warning light is also on, but the abs system clearly works as intended. I've owned a bunch of all wheel drive vehicles in the past 30 years, so I'm used to how they typically feel in the snow. I could never "easily" drift any of my previous AWD cars. Currently, If I touch the throttle on my A5, it will swing right around (as a rear wheel drive car would do) and it has good snow tires installed.

I'm hoping this issue goes away once this module is replaced and the dash lights go off, but I'd like to be prepared in case I need to bring the issue up with the dealer.

Thanks!!
Andy

Andy welcome on board our nuthouse, I am sure you will fit right in!!! Listen, an answer is very tricky from the info you give us. If you accelerate hard from rest in the snow then you can provoke wheelspin and you can feel which are spinning, to understand if you have RWD or 4WD active, sounds like RWD as you mention. These cars have alot of electronics on board so one faulty module can easily trip loads of warning lights, so you will really have to wait for the replacement one to be fitted to then see what else is faulty, or not. Best of luck and please report back. Auto or manual?

Thank you Simon! This place is a much needed/appreciated wealth of knowledge. A few days ago I went to visit a friend (who owns a tire shop). He noticed that my snow tires were a little bit cupped, and though good enough to pass the safety standard, they were "close" to the end of their life. He gave me a great deal on some new snow/ice tires. This has made a world of difference and the car is handling MUCH closer to what I was expecting from the Quattro. I can (purposely) "power drift" the car, but it no longer drives like a RWD car. I didn't think the old tires were THAT crap. Sometimes it's the obvious "common sense" solution lol. I have the Auto (Tiptronic) trans.

Hopefully by the end of January the module will have arrived and the warning lights are fixed. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Happy New Year!. All the best for 2021
