My A5 concert to MMi 3G upgrade project

Right then, I've past the point of no return with this now and I'm in it to win it. My sline Quattro was such a steal I neglected the fact that it didn't have the MMi 3G, so now a year on I've started to piece the project together despite the doomsday gloomers online saying its too expensive or too impossible, pfhh they just have no spirit left in them!

So I have 2012 model with the basic of basics concert system, I've had to purchase the following parts:

Screen, gear surround control panel & MMi 3G : ÂŁ324
Screen surround trim : ÂŁ24
B&O most amplifier (the ak model) :ÂŁ245
Wiring loom harnes (from naviservice) : ÂŁ200
Gps internal antenna fakra : ÂŁ8

Yet to purchase:

component protection for ÂŁ67 from my local ind Audi garage
The start stop button for MMi panel ÂŁ30?

So far running cost is about ÂŁ900, my gateway is the 8t0 model which is most compatible so I'm hoping the protection won't be required. I'm going to be installing it myself next Friday at my dads tooled up garage, sending the wife and kids to her mothers that weekend so that I'm not gonna be disturbed

My only concern is that I might need a new chassis to hold the 3G unit in my centre console, hopefully not but if anyone has undertaken this before and has a few tips for me I would greatly appreciate it!

I had a very comprehensive demo of the clever new Alpine Unit at ADI 2015 and it seems worth it despite the high price.

However since it does not have provision for a SIM card, it will not do the clever Google Maps/Audi Connect stuff that the 3G+ units can manage

It doesn't have the provision of a SIM card or do the Google Maps or Audi Connect as you say.

However as an upgrade for a non MMI Concert or Symphony, which it is designed for, it works out very well on price - compared to a retrofit MMI fit.

But if you do a retrofit OEM 3G Basic MMI Nav+Camera+BT+DAB+DVD+Audio Upgrade, you are looking at well over double that. And there is no guarantee that all the items fitted around the MMI are new.

So it all depends on your perspective..
