Hey team, introducing my new ride, a 2012 A5 3.0TFSI convertible. I’ve owned an S5 V8 manual coupe previously, followed by an A5 2.0TFSI Quattro convertible, both of which I loved, however this seems to be a good balance of both. In truth I wanted an S5 convertible, however I was looking at early models with high mileage and patchy service history. Then, this popped up, with 69k miles, low owners, face lift and good options, so I went for it! I didn’t even know they put this engine into UK A5s!

The spec is good, with most of the stuff I wanted 20” Alloys, B&O, electric heated seats, front & rear parking sensors with full colour display, Bluetooth connectivity, acoustic roof, Folding mirrors, xenon lights, DAB and my favourite colour Daytona Grey!

I would have liked: memory seats, cruise control and keyless entry / go, however I can manage without them!

To drive, the car lovely. The steering is so much better than my previous A5 convertible, and the MMI upgrade is much nicer to look at. I’m still getting used to the functionality, as I’ve not had a chance to drive it much!

The engine is an absolute peach! Loads of torque, with immediate power and very linier delivery that pulls right through the range.

Next steps... Well that lovely engine is very quiet, and I would love to hear more of it. Any suggestions? I will also be de-badging it and fitting some mat chrome mirrors - that will probably do it for external bar painting the callipers. Any thoughts on the colour? I did think about getting the alloys painted black, but I think that’s been done to death now!

Anyway, here she is:

Very nice indeed! I had no idea that they ever made a 3.0TFSI in the UK that wasn't an S5?! You learn something new every day! Enjoy.

detuned version of the supercharged 3.0-litre V6, best known for its appearance in various Audi ‘S’ models.

In this form it develops 268bhp. Its hooked up to a standard seven-speed, dual-clutch gearbox

And very tunable if you are interested

Yes, that’s as I understood it, a de-tuned 3.0V6 with a supercharger... What’s not to like! My local VAG tuning specialist was telling me today £1800 gets a shorter crank pulley, Revo Stage 1+ and about 400bhp!!!!! However, my first focus needs to be the sound, it is just too quiet. Do you think the removal of the centre resonator will create a nice sound? Any experiences? Not sure I can stomach 2k for a Milltek!

I bought a convertible for the wind noise when the top is down and the unobstructed view. More power sounds good, but constant exhaust\engine drone... Are you sure you want that?

Yes, I hear you, and your absolutely right, the last thing I want is engine drone. What I would say is that I’ve had a couple of V6s in the past, one being a C6 3.2 A6 Avant, and that made a lovely noise cruising around. The thing with this A5 V6 is it is completely silent inside the cabin, and I would just like a bit more engagement from that engine. Are S5s the same? Or does the S5 exhaust change things? To your point though, the last thing I want is a loud noise constantly. And after doing research on YouTube, I’m concerned that a centre resonator delete just makes it sound loud and raspy, and not that lovely smooth, deep V6 noise I’ve loved from previous cars. In fact, my old Audi 80 Cab with its 2.6 V6 sounded beautiful!

I have however ordered a Forge Motorsport Intake Hose, which will be here next week. Perhaps I can get my kicks from a bit more supercharger noise....
