in Adrian's excellent pdf, it says to delete the old maps, before installing new ones.
mine have been updated now 3 times, and the old maps have never been deleted separately, as suggested by Adrian's pdf.
I would say that the manual deletion of old maps is only really necessary, when the installation fails, for some reason.
in the file MMI3G - metainfo2.txt it says for every folder: DeleteDestinationDirBeforeCopy = "true", which explains it for me

as you can see from the pics, I am also completely up-to-date
been in the car for just over 2 1/2 hours, with the engine running, as my battery-indicator dropped one block, only from updating from Hnav_EU_K0257_5_D1 to Hnav_EU_K0257_6_D1
after updating the maps, I now have Hnav_EU_K0257_6_D2
as you can see from the screen shot of my laptop, I deleted all LIT3GP-files. which brings the total space on the SD-card just under 25 GB.
all in all, quite an experience, especially with the fantastic pdf from Adrian.

those folders are meant for MMI 3G+
so, you won't need them if you have MMI 3G (without the plus)

after that you can install the maps and activate them.
make sure your battery can do this, or leave the engine running.
in the instructions, it says that the existing navigation partition should be cleared.
my MMI has been updated 3 times now, without doing this once.
after the update you will have an error in module 5F.
this can be cleared with VCDS, but this is not absolutely necessary.
everything will work, just the same.

you can delete the folder 3GP, as you have a 3G

no, not really.
the updates remove software bugs, if any.
but you will have to update the firmware, if you want to go to the latest maps.

HN+_EU_AU3G_P0530 - this is MMI 3G+/3GP
HNav_EU_K0257_6_D2 - this is MMI 3G - HDD
never knew this could be changed so easily.
