for those of you that have had the oil changed i am wondering have you encountered this warning light. it comes on after ignition and says to reduce oil level immediately. i have had it twice now once at the oil change at 1200mi and once at 5k. just curious if these service guys are not comfortable with how much to add to our cars or if it is a sensor error. taking it in on mon.

Were these Audi service centres? The car doesnt need an oil change at 1200 or 5000. Im at 13000 and its showing first one needed at 18000.

I queried the oil change twice now and just two weeks ago it was confirmed a third time by the service dept that 18,000 (ish - as its variable) is right for the car.

If it is an Audi centre, why arent they telling you the same? and assuming mine is correct, that would suggest a lower level of competence with yours and it could be their fault.

Audi service. They admittedly had put too much in at break in and 5k svc. the 5k was a scheduled service per service personnel. All is well now.

Interestingly, had the car in for its first big service (18.5K miles) yesterday and upon starting it this morning, got the same 'please reduce oil-level' message. They're calling me later today on some other matter so I'll schedule to take it in tomorrow morning for a bit of suction action.

Not very good though - had the first oil change at APS and they didn't cock-up....... Too much oil can be worse for an engine than too little......

Oh, going back on my comments in post#3.

The oil change is every 9000 miles. For some reason my oil counter had reset and moved on to 18k. Apparantly this looks like a very common problem as others have posted similar as well.

The dealership wouldnt change my oil as they said it wasnt possible for me to move the oil service on (despite there being an option to do so in the menu!). So I went to APS and they did it.

Interestingly DD there was a recall for an issue that meant that service interval display didn't tally with mileage etc. Mine has always been tracking correctly (and prompted me for an oil change around 9K) but maybe this issue could be behind your experience?

Edit: note to self - must stop commencing posts with the word 'Interestingly' - certainly those in the same thread......

Quite possible as mine was showing the wrong figure almost from day 1. Interestingly, that wasn't found at a party ;)

Interestingly, I had my first oil change at 5000 miles like the manual suggests. No problems until yesterday at 6400 miles suddenly for no obvious reason the max oil light comes on. I certainly didn't add oil and strange that it would take 1300 miles to be "too high". Frankly, I am embarrassed since if I drove the car hard enough it should have used some oil. I must be a wussy driver although my wife hates to ride with me. I told her I am now obilgated to step it up a notch. I didn't realize a person could make their eyes rotate that far back in one's head.

had same problem on 2008 s5 replaced oil level sensor myself, was fine for a hour then came back. Checked dipstick and level was perfect......
I had it too, I pumped out 1/2 liter of oil. The dipstick shows little bit different level than electronic sensor. I don't know why, but that's it.

If the oil sensor is wrong, it shows less than min level, it doesn't show more than max.

I've had the same issue with high oil level after an oil change. I've read up that sometime there is too much oil on the oil cap and it's giving the high oil sensor a high reading. I just wiped down the cap with a paper towel and that did the trick for me.
