DRLs can be set up within the car lighting menu of MMI (e.g. on or off).

Have a look at this thread in the S5 forum asking (sort of) the same question:

If you scroll down to some of the later posts, I think the answer you're after is there.

My understanding is that if you are in Auto or Off then the Daylight Running Lights will be on.
If you switch (manually) to side lights or headlights on then the DRLs will dim (as opposed to go off? - not sure).
