... I recall when I bought my A6 over 5 years ago, I was told that the engine is run-in at the factory, and just drove it like normal fro the word go. 100k miles later and it's as sweet as anything... but... I found the owners book states you should stay below 50 mph and 3,000 rpm for the first 500 miles!

So what is the recommendation nowadays?

Anyone have it on good authority?

Check that link - there is a school of thought that says run an engine in hard - and thene theres one that says follow the manual ;)

Its up to the individual to decide which works for them - I've seen this discussed many times on car forums, and there is NEVER agreement ;)

While the materials and manufacturing tolerance have got better over the years, a new Engine still needs to be "run-in" for the parts to bed in correctly.

I would say stick to the old guideline of keeping engine speed 2/3 of maximum and not letting the engine labour in high gear (large load and low RPM). Also varying the engine speed and load.

You have nothing to loose by treating it well for the first 1000 miles:)

just my 2 cents...
