What's the story with importing a UK car (ie my 991) into Australia.

Aside from the shipping cost is it difficult to get it legal and what would resale value be like?

Would be importing into Victoria

Any advice would be appreciated

Why are you emigrating... Rubbish cold Beer there... or maybe are you a Kylie fan? .. on that theme our Neighbours kids are in Adelaide and they took their cars to Aus as UK cars are expensive. Will make some enquiries.

Hey m33. It's possible I'd have to look up the reference but basically you'd have no real issues and as the owner should be exempt from import duties etc but again I'd need to check, from memory they put a 12 month exclusion on sales after you land and yes the car would suffer a little with resale as its an import but hey the 991 starting price here is well over $200,000 so your not really going to suffer if/when you sell.

Why Vic, I've lived in pretty much every capital city in Aus and just can't bring myself to live in Melbourne....

Thanks for that Nath doesn't look like it should be impossible, only glitch is that I've only owned it for 5 months to date.

Reason for Melbourne is entirely job related - looks OK climate wise - why the downer?

It's a state thing really, I live in sydney and prefer its national parks and beaches plus the harbour over the cafe and shopping culture. That and my relatives that live there are wankers.

I'm sure the 12 month bit has ways around it for migration. It's really in place to stop all us convicts getting nice cars at reasonable prices bypassing the massive taxes we pay locally.

Not sure what import duty is but on top of whatever that is we pay gst of course and if the car is over $57k we pay 33% luxury tax. For example the RS5 FL is around $170,000 plus options on the road an S3 will set you back somewhere around $75,000 and a TTRS circa $130,000. Then when you hit R8 Spyder territory you hit a magic $460,000ish.

What's prices in Denmark like?

a quick comparison would be the R8 spyder at 3.362.906 DKK which is about 562,333 AUD. cheap right?

RS5 is 283,756 AUD without any optons.

Not sure how people in denmark afford cars (i moved to the UK to afford a proper car  )

Don't listen to nath, Melbourne is ok........... just get ready for its "weather" i have been there and had 4 seasons in 1 day, a few times, It does have a much better "cafe- restaurant" seen
You should be ok importing your car here without paying import duty. I know 2 pomies who have done that, and have made a small profit when selling the car here.

melbourne is a great city, well known for its love of aston martins, porsche 911s, BMW X5's and Gallardos. So you'll fit right in. Where abouts in Melb are you moving to roughly, as Toorak love their SUV's, Carlton love anything italian, but the St kilda/CBD areas is where you will find the most lambos and porsche's in AU.

A5's are a plenty all over melbourne as well, as well as trams, trains etc...

You wont have a problem, if you can prove your a UK emigrating and have paid for the 991 out of your own coin earnt in the UK.

Come time to sell - youl be 40-60,000 AUD up compared to GBP prices in the UK.

991 here starts at a whopping $245,000.00 AUD (approx 200k GBP)

I have a friend in New Zealand than runs a used car dealership specialising in luxury European imports. He buys most of his vehicles in the UK and shipping them from here is much more cost effective for him.

I have heard about stupid taxes of Euro cars in Aus but not sure if that included pre registered models.

Anyway my advice is to move to New Zealand as there are less Australians there.
