Hi all, just bought myself a 2014 A5 2.0TDI 177PS Black Edition, love the car but the above noise has just started.
  • It's not a
  • You can't hear it at idle
  • You can't hear it when stationary and revving
  • It only starts when drive is engaged and gets more intense when I accolade harder
  • When driving at low speed and high revs the noise is particularly noticeable, if I then pop the gearbox into neutral the noise stops instantly, back into drive and it's straight back.
  • It ultimately goes away when the Multitronic box box moves up through the gears and the revs drop to about 1500
Are any of the bolt on engine items pumps etc only engaged when in drive, as im wondering (hoping to god) that it could be one of them as the gearbox is still incredibly smooth and no engine/fault warning lights or fault codes are showing.

Really hoping it's not a gearbox issue :(

Have trawled previous posts but can't find anything with the same symptoms as mine.

Cheers

Hey thanks, would it be the same issue with a manual and automatic, I was really hoping it wasn’t the gearbox, I’m in Hertfordshire, so Doncaster it a hell of a drive. Will do some research on the input shaft bearing. Many thanks for taking the time to reply

That’s a very lucky escape.
The car I’ve just bought has had the water pump and cam belt changed

I’ve got someone to have a look and he suspects ite a noise between the engine and gearbox (potentially flywheel)
