Help- Stronic DSG auto gearbox will not engage gears!

Whilst driving on country roads and overtaking a slow moving car around 50mph...

My rev meter flew up and would not engage in any gears, just managed to roll it into a lane.

Initial thoughts are the gearbox.
I'm thinking it's a dual clutch system so hopefully only that is the issue.

I haven't got my diagnosis on me so can't read fault codes yet but will get some when recovery arrives...

Weird thing is it can engage into reverse ok!

Has anyone experienced this with similar dsg engines or have any helpful input please?

Goodness sorry Doom no ideas but I have heard that the DSG systems can have some problems. Keep us informed of your progress......

Hi team,

My Snap on is reading Fault code:

P174100 -Clutch pressure adapter , adaption limit reached.

Audi A5 2008 2.7 TDI (CAMA)
Cvt gearbox
KSS 0AW 300 045

I'm taking it now to a auto transmission specialist to see if it's the gearbox or "MECHATRONIC" which is the Ecu of the gearbox.

If it's the gearbox then swap for a simple salvage unit.
The mechatronic will be pricey as it's programmed to the individual car like the immobiliser !

Just shows the importance of servicing the DSG gearbox every 35k miles. Audi Chelt were helpful to be honest.

Fun

So any news yet Doom?????? Fingers crossed for you.....

Yes your right paradyne,it's not an s-tronic but is in fact a cvt.

Nevertheless.. surprisingly the mechatronic component is fully operative and the fault is snapped / failed components inside the box.

Two sensible options I have... break the
Car for parts or keep hunting the internet for the correct used gearbox.

Does anyone know any Audi breakers might have auto gearboxes ?
As the Audi breakers near me focus on slightly older audis.

CVT doesn't have gears, it has a band/chain between two variable diameter pulleys. This allows the engine to operate at optimal revs regardless of vehicle speed.
Multitronic simulates gears just to make drivers feel happier (it kind of defeats the whole purpose of a CVT).

It will have two multiplate clutches, one for forward and one for reverse. I'm no expert but based on the fault code I suggest that the forward clutch is worn enough that the TCU has adapted to increase pressure to its limit so can do no more. Likely it needs a new clutch.

Dippy- sounds logical what your saying but now both drive and reverse are non operational.
Auto trans have confirmed its either a snapped chain or broken drum inside the box
I suggested the clutch purely because your first post made it clear that reverse was OK. However either way the box needs to be opened up to fix it.

Good luck Doom. I guess that I have the same gearbox cos mine is 2008 (3.2FSI) with an 8 speed auto, so is mine also CVT/multitronic???? I changed the gearbox oil when I bought her and the gearbox holds 7 or 8 litres so at 30 Euro per litre it is not a cheap operation.

NOT all doom and gloom yet...

Dippy- I still think it's clutch related to be honest!

SimonRoma- Definitely worth knowing what set up you have! Give Audi Italy a ring and speak to parts I'm sure they will help out. I always find if one dealership unhelpful then try another.

I've managed to get some parts off a member of this forum (BGB) for a really good price. (Gear box and valve housin). Just shows that eBay isn't always the answer lol.

Audi Chelt confirmed from both registration numbers that both gearboxes are a match!

I normally like a challenge but I might give installing this auto box a miss and leave it to the pros!

Fingers crossed.
