Hey all,

Long time reader, first time poster. I recently bought an S5 63 reg and am completely in love with her. Sounds amazing, looks beautiful and shifts smoothly. Don't see myself getting bored for a long time 😆

One thing that makes me a little nervous is the service history of the vehicle. After having it delivered, I had checked the records and see no records of a gearbox service but the dealer did do a gearbox service prior to me buying it (not with Audi). From what I can tell, the car has not been serviced from 2017-2021 but has a clean MOT record. The car is sitting at 63k miles, so I'm wondering if it's something I should worry about?

I've booked a vehicle health check with Audi but that date is booked after the return time I have for this vehicle (which only ends in 5 more days). I've also ordered an OBDEleven which is coming shortly but not sure if that will provide much info in regards to the gearbox health. I am considering getting an extended warranty from Audi if they cover this.

Thanks!

@fred44nl The gearbox would be my only concern really, however because it's been serviced so late rather than on the service interval, is it something to worry about?
Personally, I wouldn't worry too much that the gear box wasn't serviced (others might disagree - I don't have an S5 so not really an authority) - I would be paranoid that there was an issue with the gear box and that is why the dealer serviced it recently (sorry). But you know, it drives ok doesn't it? The mileage isn't very high. And you are having the codes pulled too.

The thing that really buggers gearboxes is if they are driven badly, particularly launching them off the line. You didn't mention if its an auto or manual.

Thanks! Will get it checked out at Audi to be sure. Car drives amazing. Apologies, I'm based in UK and all our B8.5's are auto 😆

Possibly to put your mind at rest, the OB5 s-tronic gearbox was revised twice, the final one being put into production during 2013. There have been a fair number of reports of gearbox problems from B8 owners, but by far the most of them have related to the 1st and 2nd version. So there is reason to believe that Audi fixed most if not all of the problems in the 3rd version. If the gearchanges on that car are smooth, especially when coming down the gears and particularly 2nd to 1st (which is usually only at a very slow speed or stop), then it is testament to that belief.

Nevertheless servicing these gearboxes is important and it is unforgivable that someone allowed that car to reach 60K+ miles without one. You can perhaps make up for it from now on, and maybe also consider a gear oil change - which is NOT recommended by Audi (so a dealer may not even agree to do it). That's only because Audi like to market cars as not needing much service. The RS4/5 has the same gearbox and the service schedule includes the gear oil at 19K! My 2015 S5 has done 23Kish and I have already had a standard (ATF) gearbox service. I shall be having both the ATF and gear oils changed at the next service.

Hi when I bought my 2013 S5 4 years ago it had 58k on and no record of gearbox service. First thing I did was health check then gearbox service which was £249 from Audi. Considering the s tronic fluid is nearly £30 a litre it made good sense to have it done, as a 2nd hand gearbox is as much as a 2nd hand engine.
I would advise that you do regular oil and filter changes and use good quality fuel and hopefully you should have no issues.

Good tips all. I would not worry BUT I would find a good VAG independent service centre and have all fluids and filters changed pronto. FORGET the official stealers they are mainly crap.

Simon considering Audi charge £249 to do an oil and filter change on an S5 and a gearbox and filter change is the same money you won't find to many independents do it for less. Like I said, £30 a litre for the genuine S tronic oil and I believe it holds 6.7 litres & the filter. I had to quote that price to the dealer.
