Hi there. I'm an A5 3.0 driver and loving every minute in the car. Had it about ten weeks and counting.

Trouble is I returned to my car last week to find one mirror folded in and one out. No problem I thought and toggled the switch to try to get both out. When I looked closely at the drivers side I realised it had been broken and i could see the motor trying to turn a metal ring in the joint. I could push it out by hand but it hangs rather limply and swings back against the car at anything over about 30. Whether it was hit by a passing car or vandalised I have no idea......just gutted.

What are my options? I've found (but not ordered) a replacement part on ebay ( just over £100) but am i sure of getting a proper part? Shall I go to a main dealer and pay the bill - £300 i'm guessing.

As it is I cant drive it safely so need to get something sorted until then it sits outside my place looking bit forlorn.

Have you checked your insurance policy? See if they will cover it and have the dealer (Audi) fix it. I would avoid doing any work yourself or anybody on such a new car, except Audi!

£250 excess unfortunately and unprotected no claims discount so if the bill is 300 the insurers send me a cheque for 50 and send my quote up for next year.

update - audi quote was 180 for the part and 120 per hour labour to fit. Best estimate around 300 total.

any ideas? all advice appreciated.

I suggest you contact Martyn or Alan at vagparts.com and provide them your chassis number. (Tell them Mohsan sent you.)They will get you a new mirror unit for you at less than dealer price. All parts will be genuine Audi.

Try to find a reputable audi specialist in your area who will be able to fit the mirror unit for you. If not; ask a good bodyshop as they will be able to fit these easily enough. This might be a better bet especially if you need the new part painting as well.
