Will be a very sad day indeed. I wonder how they will police this, in theory even changing the tyres or lights to LED bulbs will be illegal.

Amazing just how far reaching this will be if implemented. They will probably carry out that assessment at MOT. Absolute nightmare - hope this never gets the go ahead. Imagine how many businesses will fold plus it will stifle invention and engineering advancements.

With electrification, acoustic speed traps and speed limiters, if modifications are banned then tomorrows drivers will have such a generic, uninteresting, drama less, lacklustre experience of motoring.

I do think that the not so distant driving future will be controlled through black boxes that will automatically trigger fines etc.

Big V8s and fun driving will be gone and only a long distant memory.

It's a sterilised future of no joy or fun unless .gov tells us it is....

This, tbph. Controlling speed, on the fly speed limiters in high pollution areas, etc. I guess we'll see.

I read that the German TUV (MOT) forbids unapproved modifications. It been like that for quite a while now.

That proposal seems clearly targeted at DPF and GPF removal. I don't see how it affects ECU remapping or part uprating as long as it doesn't "bypass" of "defeat" another system.
A few years ago this might have concerned me but I couldn't justify buying another ICE car now - my next car will be electric.

That's how I read it Dippy!

The words used seemed to be aimed at removing and disabling of components, which as Dippy says, and I think is emission controls like DPFs, OPFs, EGRs etc

But it is just another nail in the coffin of the ICE! But if diesel and petrol cars are to be stopped at 2030, this is only 8 years away!

BMW have been looking at hydrogen fuel for years, but not sure if this is the same thing?

That is the issue with electric vehicles, generating the electricity in the first place from non fossil fuels, range (although improving a lot in recent years), the mining and manufacturing of batteries, charging infrastructure, including EV owner's homes, life span of the mega expensive batteries.

Its nothing like that mate, They are turning CO2 and some other crap into diesel that once burned is 0 emissions (If I understand it properly) That would help clean up the air too so hopefully this actually happens. Audi have put a lot of money into it

Those "CO2" neutral designs are based on the idea that the emissions from the ICEs (which are reduced but certainly not zero) are recaptured so that the whole lifecycle becomes net zero. However there are various processes which make the whole system less efficient than simply generating electricity from renewable sources and putting it directly into the batteries of electric cars. I imagine that the various schemes will run in parallel and some will increase in popularity and others will decline. And as Dave points out, Government legislation will kill off the ICE market anyway no matter how the fuel is created.
