Nick, it should do 40mpg, provided you don't hoon it all the time :)

Don't know what Hoon is but no I don't have traffic light drag races if that's what you mean :running:

TT is thirsty as its mainly used for short trips so don't have a chance to warm up properly

I have done about 7k in my car and had it from new since end of Jan and I have to say I am disappointed with the fuel consumption. I know you take published figures with a pinch of salt but every car I have had I found a magic figure of 10 to 15% off claimed mpg is always what I would achieve.
So last year I realised I needed a bigger and more economical car & wanted to change from my S3 to an A5 245ps tdi as it had the space I wanted and using my calculation should get about 42 to 45 mpg.
How wrong was I! So far DIS is showing long term average of 38.1mpg and I think it is pretty accurate because I do about 450 miles each time until I fill up which is usually around 11.7 gallons.
I do just over 90 miles every day and about two thirds is motorway and I have been taking it so easy recently to try and better the mpg but still seem to get the same miles from a tank!
My long term average in my S3 was just under 30mpg and whilst I quite often took it steady I still had more little blasts than I do now.
I have noticed however that mpg seems to be better in auto or individual mode rather than efficiency on drive select. Hoping it is true that it will improve one more miles are on it.

How are you getting these high figures? 40 MPG from 3.0 seems extremely high if it's actual MPG.

My 2009 2.7 TDI gets about 28 mpg. And I don't drive like mad.

I do about 50 KM (30 miles) to work and 50 KM back home each day + a few shorter trips.

I live on the Faroe Islands, so there are some mountains to go up and down, but not a lot. No stand-still waiting for lights and no motorway at all.

The 28 MPG is actual MPG and not DIS information.

I can add that I got about 40 actual MPG from my 2001 Audi A4 1.9 TDI

Am I doing something wrong, is there something wrong with my car or is this normal?

A major factor I'm finding with the 3.0 (and I also did with my previous one) is the external temperature. I was originally averaging about 30-35 (real) during a recent cold spell. Now its a little warmer (according to the DIS 10c is the 'change point') I'm getting 35-40 (real) regularly. Until this morning, when the temp was 8.5c and I got 34mpg on way to work. All other factors were the same. This theory was discussed in another thread a number of years ago (during my first A5) and after some testing I worked out (maybe totally wrongly, but anyway) that the car alters the management of the engine / amount it takes for heating etc during these colder times and it affects the fuel economy to somewhere around 10-20%.

There are obviously a load of other factors such as driving style, type of journey, traffic levels, age / looseness of engine, equipment (heater / radio etc) being used that affect mpg achieved. However, I've come to the following conclusions:

1) If I really was that worried about mpg I wouldn't have bought a 3.0 car anyway.
2) If I can afford ÂŁ43k on a car, I can afford ÂŁ30 a week on diesel.
3) May as well drive it and enjoy it.
4) Only concentrate on the real time mpg when the journey is that mind numbingly boring that you can't enjoy the driving side of it.
5) Manuafacturers mpg claims are 'manufactured' - as in they make engines / cars etc that can obtain certain figures under certain conditions (the test ones) that you're never going to get close to in real life driving.
6) The only reason to really worry about mpg is if you think there is a problem with the car.
7) There are far bigger things to worry about in life than this!

Great posts on the subject, had a loaner 2.0 tdi 177 black edition quattro manual for 4 days and was getting around the 41mpg, that's all town driving with a heavy right foot.

Noticed when I had a 3.0tdi, 30 around town was the best I could get

Badger... spot on mate. Agree with every word.
I have seen my DIS go up to 44 on occasion now it's warming up but I know it's really just a fleeting feel-good indicator. Like you say, less air-con/heating at the moment, new tyres etc. etc.
My petrol A3 did less mpg and I've got nearly triple the power so how can I complain.
Mpg also changes on a regen so I find it goes in cycles. I use the DIS more to gauge that the DPF is getting cleaned out.:D
I always fill to the brim so driving with all that extra weight makes me feel so ruddy reckless ha ha ha.

I partly agree with what you guys are saying and as I said above you never get the MPG that the manufacturer claims but I have never had a car that is so far off the claimed MPG.
My car is leased and I had to justify to myself that a high increase in lease cost would be more than covered by the saving on fuel. Luckily I have worked out with the MPG I am getting it is just about working out the same.
I think also that deep down I should not have been an impatient tart and ordered so quickly and maybe done more research, lol!

Maybe a remap is in order as I had better MPG with my previous 2 cars.

2008 giving me 46.3 today (not mapped yet) on non motorway commute. 27.4 when really flooring it. Usualy get 380-420 to a tank (brim to indicator beep) but it's not about measuring life out with a teaspoon.

If this DIS is correct it was showing 42.1 today for a 60 mile journey using Auto setting on Drive Select. This is a 2013 model and I seem to be getting 440 miles before the fuel light comes on.

picked my A5 up today and had a pleasant surprise they gave me a full tank free nice very nice gesture  so I wont be worrying about fuel for a week or two

Nick. I find mine runs smoother with Esso and BP fuel with the occasional run through of Ultimate. I don't get any better performance or mpg with BP Ultimate but sure it can only help keep jets healthy. Cheapy supermarket diesel seems ok but noticed it a little more noisey and heard a few people say that without additives it can get oily and sticky through prolonged use. Call me anal but I'd rather not take chances just bunging any old sh!t in there.

Shell V-power is all I put in mine... Supermarket stuff just doesn't perform as well I don't think.

According to tests there is a (albeit small) difference in fuel consumption when using V-power over "regular" fuel but it did not justify the full price difference.
On the other hand, fully agree on buying fuel from the big brands as cheap supermarket fuel will simply cut back on additives that help keep the engine clean.

That's interesting... got trapped with my A5 at a Shell place on the way to Chichester (near you) where the only pump I could get to was Shell v-power.. so thought I'd try it my tank was very low and range showed 30 miles. Tried the tank full and didn't notice any difference in performance or economy.. now back to Supermarket best.. 134.7 at the moment!

Cheers

I guess driving style is a factor, don't know how you like to drive but I tend to drive very aggressively, heavy foot in first 4 gears especially, and I find that cheapo diesel just doesn't give quite as much ooomph.
